Large Slate Hairstreak - Brangas caranus (Stoll, 1780)

Hello TN friends!

This photo was taken under the hard midday sun in the garden of my mother. Perhaps the view of details of the butterfly have been severely affected by this type of light. But this is a butterfly that until now I had only seen inte rocks of mountains over 1200 m.a.s.l; find this in my mother's garden was a big surprise for me, because our houses in the town (Montalbán) is just at 600 m.a.s.l and about 7 km away from the places where usually I've found these butterflies.

I believe this butterflies (and others rarely seen) are flying to our gardens, because another butteflies have spread the rumor that I take shots here and then I will post the shots in TN!!!... ha... ha... ha... :)

Jesús

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Lycaenidae
Genus: Brangas
Species: caranus

Introduction:
All neotropical Hairstreak species are placed in the tribe Eumaeini. Until recently the taxonomy of this tribe was chaotic, with a high percentage of the species unstudied, and inappropriately filed away in the Old World genus Thecla. In 2004 Lamas published a checklist of neotropical butterflies, which included a revision of the Eumaeini by Robbins, in which the 1,058 currently known species are partitioned into 83 genera.

The genus Brangas comprises of about 16-20 species, all of which are neotropical in distribution, with the majority of species being confined to northern South America. Several of the species were recently discovered by Robbins and have not yet been scientifically described.

The males of all Brangas species have dazzling metallic blue uppersides, with a narrow blackish edging at the apex. Females have more rounded forewings. Their uppersides are a dull earthy brown colour, with a slight pale blue sheen at the base of the wings.

Brangas caranus is found in Surinam, Venezuela and Trinidad.

Habitats:
This species is found in rainforest at altitudes between about 1200m.

Adult behaviour:
The butterflies are rare, and invariably encountered as singletons. They sometimes visit the flowers of Eupatorium for nectar.
