Salkımlı Sümbül - Common Grape Hyacinth
Known Hazards: The bulb is poisonous. It contains a substance called comisic acid, which is said to act like saponin. Although poisonous, saponins are poorly absorbed by the human body and so most pass through without harm. Saponins are quite bitter and can be found in many common foods such as some beans. They can be removed by carefully leaching the seed or flour in running water. Thorough cooking, and perhaps changing the cooking water once, will also normally remove most of them. However, it is not advisable to eat large quantities of food that contain saponins. Saponins are much more toxic to some creatures, such as fish, and hunting tribes have traditionally put large quantities of them in streams, lakes etc in order to stupefy or kill the fish.

Physical Characteristics: Bulb growing to 0.3m by 0.1m. It is in flower from April to May, and the seeds ripen from July to August. The flowers are hermaphrodite and are pollinated by Insects. The plant is self-fertile. It is noted for attracting wildlife.

Habitats: Woodland garden, sunny edge, dappled Shade, lawn. The plant prefers sandy, loamy and clay soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and alkaline soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires dry or moist soil.

Medicinal Uses: None known.

Scientific classification:
Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Liliopsida
Order: Asparagales
Family: Hyacinthaceae
Genus: Muscari

Merhaba Fevzi Bey,

a stunning capture of this lovely bulb. We grow them here too, but they are not native.
You've captured it at just the right time too -- just before the bells open!
Great colours, super details

Very attractive plant with those beautiful blue "grapes" on it, Fevzi.
The look of them however suggests it would be dangerous to eat them :-).
I have a picture of a similar plant from the Indian hills which I want you to ID for me when I post it one day.
The image is well captured.

Hello Fevzi, I have just read your letters in the Forum, and checking up on you here.

I love these Grape Hyacinth flowers and planted the bulbs at home a few years ago. They keep appearing each year, but the flowers get less and less. Not as good as the wild ones.

Attractive picture here, nice and sharp, and the flower looks so real. Thanks for sharing,

Preciosos colores y unos detalles fabulosos.
Saludos, JL.

Merhaba Hemşehrim,

merhaba Fevzi bey;

Hi Fevzi,
Another charming coloured, well taken and great composed photo. I added it immediately into my favourites. It gives positive worth to your portfolio. Bravo!

Gamarcoba Fevzi Abi,
Nefis bir enzal resmi olmuş. Ellerine sağlık. Selamlar

Bonjour Fevzi,
Très beau portrait de ce muscari, avec une très belle restitution des couleurs et une très bonne maîtrise de l'utilisation du flash. Bravo pour ta note très complète et intéressante sur cette petite fleur attachante (même si elle est toxique...).

Merhaba Fevzi, lovely flower with splendid colors, great blurry BG, exccellent sharpness and wonderful details, very well done, have a great week end, ciao Silvio

Hi, dear Fevzi.
In spite of the fact that you have applied f/5.6 again ( : )) ) I like you very nice shot so much. Flowers are in focus at whole and BG is perfectly blurred I also like dark colour tones of the picture and its composition. Refined work. My best regards and TFS.

Merhaba Fevzi,
Bu fotoğrafın da çok güzel. Çiçeğin tü detayları ortada. Sanki elimde tutuyormuşum gibi. Tebrikler.

Bize bunu Arap otu diye öğrettiğini hatırlıyorum. Yoksa yanılıyor muyum? Ama çok güzel olmuş tebrikler.
