Steller's Jay
Cyanocitta stelleri
By Nora Bryan

This dark iridescent blue cousin of the Blue Jay is a bird of the mountains. In Alberta it lives only in the mountains. It may breed in the southern Rockies around Waterton, and is sometimes seen in Banff and Jasper. It is far more common west of the continental divide, in BC.

Steller's Jays prefer montane coniferous forests above 1200 metres. In winter they might be attracted to feeders in mountain towns, where they share the bold and aggressive habits of their blue-jay cousins.

Like other corvids, the Steller's Jay is an opportunistic feeder. Everything from nestlings to nuts might make a tasty meal. Once emboldened, they will take food scraps readily at campsites.

The bulky nest of twigs, bark and leaves is molded with mud and lined with grass and rootlets. The three to five bluish green eggs are marked with brown. Young are fledged 18 days after an incubation period of 16 days.

Hi Rick

These are one of my favourite N American birds. Nice shot - you have captured the cheeky impudent nature of the bird. Colours are excellent and composition likewise good.

Hello Rick,
This is beautiful specie that I have never seen "in real". I don't think that we have them here. I like this capture a lot with good composition, nice details and colors. This environment is so beautiful. Well done and TFS,

Hello Rick,
This shot brings back memories of when I saw Steller's Jay years ago in Yosemite NP. This is a sharp well composed capture that shows the colors well against a fine contrsting green BG
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Rick,

What a beautiful bird - never saw one of these either. The colors, pose, details are all wonderful. He stands out so well in the natural setting.

A magnificent variation on Blue Jay, Rick. The bird is really beautiful with those subtle blue colors on its plumage and that cocky handsome crest on its head.
Very well captured shot.

Hi Rick

I think the focus could be better, but what a great pose. Tall and alert. Nice saturation of plumage colours with good catchlight. :-)

Hi Rick,
Good sharp image.
Well composed.
Eye, beak, plumage are very sharp.
Well done!

Hi ya Rick,
"This bird is named after the German naturalist Georg Steller.
The Steller's Jay is the provincial bird of British Columbia."

It is one of my favorite Jays. Whenever we drive to BC, I start looking for them in the Roger's Pass. Their colours are amazing, and when lucky sunlight will bring out their amazing iridescent dark blue!

And did you know its alarm call is a harsh nasal "wah". And that it also will imitate the cry of the Red-tailed Hawk, with the effect of causing other birds and prey creatures to vacate feeding areas as the Steller's Jay approaches.

This one here is a wee pale, etc. so I tried some sunshine in the WS, some focus, and some compo without cloning. ... Hope you like, tfs,
wah, wah, wah, Jay
