The Southern Black-Backed Gull
Larus dominicanus
Maori: Karoro

This is the largest of the three gull species that live in New Zealand. It has a wingspan of 120cm.

Black Backed Gulls live in all parts of the country from high country river basins to the urban refuse tip.

First year birds are a mottled brown.

In the second year the back is brown and the breast and neck are white flecked with brown.

In the adult, the head, neck, underparts, rump and tail are white; the back and upper wings are black with a narrow white trailing edge. The bill is yellow with a red spot at the tip of the lower bill. The eye is pale yellow and the legs greenish yellow.

If you read my notes you will realise that this is an adult Black Backed Gull.

I think he looks quite regal here. . . He was on the top of Mount Victoria in Devonport yesterday surveying his domain - and looking out for some scraps of food from the visitors up there.

I dedicate this to our friend Howard. As I said, this fellow looks very regal, and so does Howard to me...

Hi Janice, a great picture of the Gull what a fine bird. You have got good colour and detail and DOF. well done..

Hi Janice,
Excellent close up of this gull!
I like so much this close approach, and the nice pose catched.
You did it great with DOF to get such a soft and nicely blurred backgrund.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,

Hi Janice,
I saw your other gull on Trek Lens just now,but was in a hurry to get back here.
(I post the odd photo there, but don't stop too long usually)
Your shots these days are always very good.
I never knew this gull was Karoro.
That is where I am right now (a suburb of Greymouth)
Great work.

Hello Janice,
This is a very close portrait! I like those tones of colors and this difficult exposition with which you managed very well. This is a nice portrait! Well done!

Hi Janice, a fine portrail of this very handsome Gull. Very clear and great sharpness, love the yellow beak. Good DOF pushes the Gull to the front of the picture. Wonderful composition, looking regal!..

Hello Janice,
Fine close capture of a species of gull that I didn't succeed in seeing in Australia, so it's nice to see this sharp and well-composed presentation of the Southern Black-backed.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Czesc Janice! :)
This is really nice (even if not very colourful) presentation! :) Deatils are very good, colours are well saturated and the POV very nice :)

bonjour janice
il n'est pas trop difficile de s'approcher de ces oiseaux pour en faire un portrait en revanche il est plus difficile de reussir une photo qui ne soit pas trop exposée a cause di blanc tres present, pour vous c'est reussi;bravo.

Great close up shot of this gull, amazing detail and great color, TFS
