Last year I had the privilege to shoot a full eruption cycle at Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes, near Yogyakarta in Indonesia. Over several months I witnessed the mountain change character tremendously. At this stage, the active plug dome at the summit is welling up meters per day, like a fresh crusty muffin in the oven. Long flows of chunky lava are just revving up. After two weeks mountain-gazing, things are really picking up!

I most enjoyed shooting at night close to the full moon, when long exposures brought out mountain detail and deep blue skies while still capturing the crimson glow of the incandescent lava. By daylight the lava was barely visible. Without the moon, nighttime shots were simply black.

This is a composite, which may or may not be legal. It's no more a distortion of reality than a standard time exposure, however, and I feel the subject will be better appreciated here than at TL.

The backstory: I perched along the edge of a steep canyon to get this unobstructed shot of the mountain. And the first thing I did was drop my cable release into the canyon. This limited me to a 30-sec exposure on my Fuji S2 Pro. And I needed three of those to capture a single lava spurt tumbling top to bottom through the frame.

I was surprised when I sandwiched shots to find a visible gap between star trails. Not more than a second passed between consecutive exposures. I shot with a Nikkor 80-200/2.8 lens at 200mm (300 equivalent on 35mm film). The planet spins quick when you look off it with that narrow field of view!

Stay tuned for more "Moods of Merapi"...

Hi Djuna,
Bravo !!

Hi Djuna, This is a wonderful picture of a volcano. Never seen one live. The lava flow is beautifully captured. The star trails add to the effect.

Hi Djuna and a belated but warm welcome to TN

This is a splendid photo!
The long shutter really helped you into getting the extra light and colors for this amazing catch here and the exposure is well handled.
Also due to that, the stars look more like a meteor shower :))
The tones everywhere are lovely, the details and very nice and sharp and the composition is outstanding!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Djuna,
A spectacular sight, Good shot of star trails but with an erupting volcano as the foreground? Doesn't get much better than that. I'm always impressed by long exposures of starry skies, mainly because I tried in the Himalayas but it was pitch black and so unbelievably cold that it was all a dismal failure. As you say interesting to see the break in the star trails, I wouldn't have expected that. I think composites are fine, people post stitched panoramas and HDR images which really aren't any different. Excellent work, looks like a fantastic place.

Adrian

Hello Djuna,
Checking TN intermittently these days... I didn't notice the star trails on thumbnail. Truly magnificent view when I clicked on it. Some people deliberately get these gaps by blocking the lens for a few seconds. Very well done. Look forward to seeing more!

This is excellent work for a composite the layering of several images gives this a nice effect. :)

Hi Djuna.
Both of you vulcano shots are very impresing and interesting to look at, lovely long exposures to show a most unusual scene in TN.
Congratulations and my late welcome to TN.
Felipe.

Hi Djuna,
Pretty amazing, your shot is very clear, your picture even could catch and diferentiate between the flow structure with the pyroclastics texture of it's lava dome, the molten flow make the volcano really shows the breathtaking activity but in the same time it so tranquil if we see it from distance, thanks for the great notes, really hard effort and dangerous attempt you made there, but the picture is worth a thousand smile :)

Great capture.
