Hello my Friends!
I just returned from the field but unfortunatelly today without any special effects. Even if the spring is already present, there is still only a "few" insects in the wild... And beacuse of that let me show you my earlier photo from spring 2005 :>

Here is a male of field cricket - Gryllus campestris (Orthoptera: Gryllidae). This species is a well known thanks to his musician talent. Its body size was about 19 mm.

It is really common in Poland, even if in some other parts of Europe it is endangered (mainly because destroying of habitats - dry, open areas with low vegetation). It can be found also in some regions of Asia and N America where it was indtroduced.

Everybody knows that crickets are very good musicians, and they use songs to attract females. It is a kind of presentation thanks to which male says "come here my lady, I am the best one in this area" :)
And such behaviour can be observed in most cricket species. But of course it is not easy to "keep" female when all around other crickets are singing too...
So what can small insect do to win? Well, in some field cricket species an interesting behaviour can be observed. Male invites his lady to the special tunnel mined in the ground. When she is inside he mures the entrance by special protein substance. Now she is a prisoner, but only untill she will lay her eggs (with his children!). Really the benefit is on both sides: female is save for some time against predators, and after all she can eat the proteit substance to keep some "energy" free, while male does not have to look out for the rivals :)

I hope you will like this creature :>

Hello Radomir,
a clear and sharp picture of this field cricket. Particularly, the surface structures are nicely presented. Even the long left antenna is in good focus.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Radomir,
this field cricket is well presented here. The pov is well chosen in the respect that most details are presented here. I can't wait for the moment they start making their 'songs' again.
Good crop as well.

Hello Radomir,
Pity we don't have this insect musician in Sweden, but it's nice to know it is common in Poland!
This sharp and well composed portrait of it is an attraction to sail across the Baltic and have a look at a living specimen.
TFS and enjoy your weekend,

Hi Radomir,
Excellent portrait of the Cricket. Very neat and sharp. Superb colours and the BG looks so natural. the lighting is perfect too. The only thing missing is the 'songs'. Love to listen to that. Very nicely composed and framed. Kudos.

hi Radomir,
excellente image avec des détails très fins. Le flash donne la lumière qui lui manquait.

Hi Radek

Another very beautiful macro from you!
I'm more and more amazed by the deep DOF of yuor camera...it may be only my imagination, but i think that my f/5.8 would produce a much shallower view...
Anyway, i really like the details on this cricket and also the strong but very eye-catching contrast from its body.
Very niec to see the antennas in great focus, too and the BG behind them nicely blurred.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Radomir.
Your presentation of this insect is perfect. I like razor sharpness and clear colours of the picture, excellent DOF and impressive point of view, effective lighting and terrific details. I give highest mark. That is why I tell you that for my taste a bit larger DOF would be better without any blurred parts of the shot. Bravo and my best regards.

Hi Radomir. Very nice photo of the cricket. I like composition and perfect sharpness. In our cold region this insect is rather rare. I found it during some my trip to more warm areas.

Good registration.
