Wing span 34 – 38 mm.

Never before I have seen ringlets with such a brilliant iridescence as during my hikes at Grossglockner in the Tyrol in August 2006.

When those ringlets came to sit down on my path in the sun, their iridescence was so strikingly brilliant they reminded me of tropical Morpho butterflies – that in fact may be closely related to the Satyriinae subfamily anyway, showing lustre on the upper sides and good numbers of well developed eye spots on the undersides of wings.

Observed on mountain hikes to various locations in the highest regions of Austria’s Hohe Tauern National Park to the end of August, the species seem to be Erebia cassioides, the Common Brassy Ringlet.

First described from the mountains of Heiligenblut in Carinthia, Austria, Erebia cassioides is showing the widest distribution of all members of the tyndarus group of brassy ringlets. It is reported from the Pyrenees, from two isolated areas of the Alps in the southwest and the east, and from various mountain locations at the Balkan.

The species inhabits grassy spots between rocks at high elevations between 1600m and 2600m. Butterflies are on their wings in one extended generation from July to September. Caterpillars feed on grass: Festuca ovina.

Hello Peter!
I really have to say that thanks to your picture I learned a lot about Erebia genus. Very good idea for series (maybe you should make a new theme like "European Erebia species"?), very useful and helpful!
In this picture I especially like the mosaic of colours on its wings (even if there are not to many). POV and DOF as always are good, and a note - very professional.

I like this metallic iridescence that shows how well Nature handle light interference to make colors. Perfect details and the exact angle to view the phenomenon.

Prachtvoll die schillernde Bordüre dieses Mohrenfalters.Da musst Du dich wohl nach dem Licht richten um diesen Effekt zu fotografieren.Wir sind Dir alle so dankbar, diese Serie gebracht zu haben. Dank den Vergleichsmöglichkeiten, kann man die verschiedenen Arten jetzt ziemlich gut unterscheiden, was ich an Hand von kleinen Zeichnungen in den Sachbüchern einfach nicht kann.

Hallo Peter,
danke für den brillianten cassioides. Die Zeichnungen, insbesondere auch der Schillereffekt, sind auf dem linken Vorderflügel besonders scharf und deutlich. Kopf-, Thorax- und Abdomenstrukturen sind nicht so deutlich aufgelöst. Liegt das an der weiten Blendenöffnung oder an Bewegungen des Falters?
