Australian Pelican
Pelecanus conspicillatus

Description
There are seven species of pelicans in the world, all of which are similar in shape and, with one exception, are primarily white in colour. Males are larger than females. The most characteristic feature of pelicans is the elongated bill with its massive throat pouch. The bill is 40-50cm long and is larger in males than females.

Pelicans weigh 4.0-6.8kg, are 1.6-1.8m long. Pelicans have large wings and a wingspan of 2.3-2.5 m. They have an extremely light skeleton, weighing less than 10% of their total body weight.

Joke Time

Why do pelicans carry the fish they catch in their beaks?
Because they haven't got any pockets!

Why was the pelican kicked out of the hotel?
Because he had a big bill!

Why do birds fly south for the winter?
Its easier than walking!

Hi Stephanie,
Interesting pose of the pelican!
It seems like having a big weight over him.
Very good the clear and sharpness of the image.
We can enjoy the all the beauty of the subtle pink tones of heir beak.
I think you managed so good the exposure to handle the lack of good light.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hello Stephanie,
Very cute pose :) Although it looks a bit underexposed I still liked the exposure and the Pelican contrasting it. It looks sharp enough so I have no idea trinko suggested to sharpen it some more. I really liked the composition and the oval shape of the pelican. Well done.

Greetings,
Ahmet

Hi Stephanie

What a superb photo and what an outstadning pose this lovely australian pelican gave you here :)
The place where you found it is also terrific and it gave you just enough cearance for a nicely blurred BG.
Very good exposure (despite the missing sunlight), terrific and sharp details and charming composition.

Bravo, TFS and Happy Easter!

Hello Steph,
You captured a great pose from this bird. I like those details, exposure, POV and composition a lot. These birds make me smile every time I see them and I don't know hwy really... Well done,
Claudine

You managed a really nice exposure on this beautiful bird despite the low light. I'm wondering how they manage the birds there at the park. Do they all have clipped wings?
