[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is another of Gareths beautiful geckos which he kindly let me photograph a few weeks ago.
Naultinus elegans, the Auckland Green Gecko,is usually a bright green, with rows of yellow cream to white blotches down the side of the body.
The tail of this gecko is very versatile and is used as a 'fifth limb' for climbing, for balance, and for food storage.
The interior of the mouth and tongue are coloured a rich blue.
A bright canary yellow form of N.elegans is sometimes found. These 'albino' variations possibly have a recessive gene, that exhibits as a pigment lack in the chromophores.
N.elegans is found only in the North Island of New Zealand, north of Taranaki to Auckland.
It is arboreal,a tree dweller, frequenting many bushy plants and epiphytes, but often favours stands of Manuka and Kanuka.

(Many thanks to Gareth (the Lizard Man) for the information.

Steve, you've got Geckos on NZ? So there is no choice - I must to visit yours paradise :-))) I love geckos. Last holidays I searched them hard [they live on Crimea] but with no luck. Very green picture. I hope you didn't nail it to the tree like Norwegian Blue? Steve? Did you? Don't tell me your Gecko is probably pining for the fjords ;-)))

What a beautiful colouring the gecko has Steve. I can't say that I've seen him up here. The only lizards my cat brings in is the brown ones.
Good shot. TFS.
