Yellow-headed Blackbird
Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus
General Description

By Gustave J. Yaki

The distinctively-marked Yellow-headed Blackbirds breeds in western Canada and USA, south to northern Arizona and New Mexico. In Alberta, wherever there are large cattail marshes you will find this easily-identified bird. It is absent only in the high mountain country or the far northern reaches of the province.

The first males arrive in southern Alberta, from as far as south central Mexico, in very early April. They occupy large wetlands in both rural and urban areas. Within Calgary city limits, few such suitable, undisturbed marshy areas remain. One small site is along the west side of the Bow River, seen from Carburn Park. Outside the city, suitable nesting areas are just to the east along Glenmore Trail and in the Irricana area. Most Yellow-headeds leave Alberta by the end of September, but in some years a few remain, finding sustenance in large cattle feedlots.

During the nesting season, the female searches the moist substrate of the marsh for insect food for her young; beetles, waterbugs, dragonflies, snails and other invertebrates. At other times their diet usually consists of seeds.

The males are polygynous, mating with as many females as can occupy their territory, sometimes up to six. Their fairly bulky cup nest is attached to live bulrushes or other emergent vegetation growing in deep, open water. Usually four eggs are laid and incubated for 12 to 13 days. The young fledge in 9-12 days. Two broods may be attempted. After the breeding season, adult males may gather in single-sex flocks, often with other male blackbird species.

Hi Rick
I love this bird, it has the same colours as my soccer team ;-)
Good details, nice POV and well composed.
Maybe the dark could bright up slightly for more details.
Well done.

This is a superb bird Rick with great yellow head :-) I like those details you captured with bright lighting and pose from the bird. It looks like it could have been taken on a camping site! Thanks,

Hi Rick, :)

Such a beautiful bird, I have never seen one before! Awesome sharpness, with fantastic colours! I have been reading a little on Alberta, I'm in Love! :) As always a joy to see your work, check your inbox I'll chat with you later.

Well shoot! On our last trip I was looking forward to getting shots of these fellows as we had seen them before in that area. I saw only one... and didn't get a shot of it. I'll have to be content with your shot for now. It is very sharp and the color accurate.

Hello Rick,
That's a real beauty you've captured on the beach, his colours and patterns are really striking and his sharp profile stands out very nicely against the sand. Nice composition too.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Rick , ultra sharp photo , colors excellent , TFS.

Magnifique avec beaucoup de détails, l'environment démontre son habitat mais n'est pas particulièremnetn esthétique.

Hi Rick,
I've got the gear and the time and opportunity to get shots like this one but for the life of me,I simply don't. What I would like to know is ,did you shot in Av mode or automatic for this one and use a tripod?I just can't seem to wrap my head around digital photography in the way that gets the results that do justice to my camera. The focus is superb and your crop works wonders. Thanks for sharing this one as I need some sun the snow is bringing me down. Bob
