Today the third part of the "Cicindelidae saga" ;>

Here we have a female of Cicindela (Cicindela) hybrida hybrida Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) from Budy Grabskie village, Bolimow Landscape Park (C Poland).

If you remember my last Cicindelidae presentation you probably also remember that till now about 2300 species have been described in this family. Among them only 7 species are known from Poland, and C. hybrida is one of them. This is the most common Polish tiger beetle species, easy to find in every type of sandy habitats, even in big cities. Very often it occurs in really high number of individuals.

As for me this species is really a special one (even if very common) :> There are a few reasons why. The first is that it was my first tiger beetle observed in the field. I had also possibility to study its interesting reproductive behaviour during preparation of my master thesis some years ago ;> Finally it is the first Cicindelidae species photographed by me this year ;>

But why the title of this picture is: "fast runner"?

Well, the answer is really simple :) Among Cicindelidae species there are the fastest terrestrial runners in the insect world! Really the fasters tiger beetles come from Australia (Rivacindela hudsoni and R. eburneola) not from Poland, but European species still have a great speed.

Both Australian runners, Rivacindela hudsoni and R. eburneola can run with maximum recorded speeds of 2.49 m/s what means about 170 body lengths per second!!!
These tiger beetles (and really all other studies Cicindelidae species) are so fast that during hunting they have to stop from time to time because their "brains" can not keep up with actualization of all these things seen by their eyes! Can you imagine to run faster than to "think" about it? ;>

And maybe that is the reason why it is so difficult to take a picture of these amazing creatures... ;>

Hello Radomir,
Fine capture of this speedy beetle. You have good DOF and sharpness and present a fine POV and comp.
I am amazed to see that the hairs stand out so. Could this be due to the PP work?

TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Radomir,
everytime I am amazed about the fine quality of macro images from compact cameras. My 100 mm macro doesn't get this fine images unless I use extension rings.
Well captured this one and also an interesting note!

Hi Radek

Another splendid shot of a tiger-beetle from you, my friend!
The details here are again stunning and the textures on its legs (especially) are fantastic!
I rally like to see its jaws here...i don't realy know why but that stood out better in this picture for my personal eyes :)
The natural colors are great and the exposure and flash management are spot-on!

Bravo and TFS

Hey Radomir,
Again an excellent pic, extremely sharp and focus spot on. I appreciate your comment, they run faster than their brain can work. It reminds me of my camera, it has to stop from time to write the buffered images to the memeory card ;-).
The insect world is really amazing ! TFS! Patrick

Hello Radomir,
You do have some most impressive captures of insects and this Tiger Beetle is no exception!
The sharp details show the fascinating pattern and textures and the colour is very beautiful. You must have been pretty flat on the sand to get this splendid shot!
TFS and all the best wishes, Ulla

Dear Radomir,
also missed out on this one. As I said before, I know that Tiger beetles are difficult to tame for a picture, but you are of course a Ring master of cicindelids! Look at the details like the scary mandibles, you'd say a sabretooth Tiger. Well done. And as usual you add the interesting note to boot.

Great color, sharpness, lighting and background.

Excellent capture, with everything under tight control!
I am glad to see now one of the insects from cincidelidae family. I understand you are so fascinated with this killer runners, if I was an insect, I would not like to come across one of this :)
This photo, added to the previous one you posted is a relly great descriptive documentation, and with the note, better impossible. Thanks and best regards, Felipe.
