Larval hostplants: Recorded from India and Thailand on Symphorema involucratum (Verbenaceae) (Inoue, Kennett & Kitching, [1996] 1997).
Global Distribution: Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Burma/Myanmar, Nicobar and Andaman Islands, southeastern China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia (Sumatra) and the Philippines (Palawan).


The Sphingidae are a family of moths (Lepidoptera). They are commonly known as hawk moths, sphinx moths and hornworms. There are about 1,200 described species in the family (Grimaldi & Engel, 2005). It is best represented in the tropics but there are species in every region (Scoble, 1995). They are moderate to large in size. Among the Lepidoptera, they are distinguished for their rapid, sustained flying ability (Scoble, 1995). The narrow wings and streamlined abdomen are clearly adaptations for rapid flight.

Hi Jitti.
Your collection of the moth is so big as my sparrow collection but I think your character are more quiet and delicate. I like perfect reproduction of all features of this specimen. Excellent sharpness and details, perfect light and colours. Skillfully done picture. My best wishes and TFS.

All the salient features of this rather large moth are very well recorded in this image, JC.
Moths have a tedency to station themselve at unlikely locations. This one seems to be resting against an idecipherable surface. It that a painted wall?

Another excellent macro from you!
I remember seeing something very similar in my garden in the past few years...i don't know why but we don't have them anymore.
The details are great and very sharp and the textures are excellent.

Great shot of this Hawk-moth: sharp capture of a nice fresh specimen. Hawk-moths are among my favourites and it is my aim to contribute at least one species this year.
