Marsh Owl (Asio Capensis)

A medium sized brown owl of moist grasslands. Size 32-38 cm. The bill is short and deep, with a sharply hooked tip. The eyes are brown, the bill is black and the feet are blackish. The legs are feathered with buff-coloured feathers.

The Marsh Owl is mostly brown. The facial mask is paler buffy-brown than the rest of the head and upperparts, and is rounded and not heart-shaped. It has small ear tufts, which appear quite close together. In flight the wings have large paler patches at the ends, and the tail is barred.

This is a common owl of grassland areas where there are some marshy patches. In summer it is generally secretive and seldom seen, but tends to hunt in daylight hours in the early morning and late afternoon in the winter months. At these times, it is most likely to be seen quartering over the veldt, flying in with steady wing beats and twisting and turning every now and then. It often twists and drops down into the grass. It may also be seen perched on fence posts.

The Marsh Owl subsists mainly on small rodents, insects and small birds. It will also take shrews, young hares, frogs and bats. The call is a harsh tearing croak: zzzrk.

It breeds in the winter months, February to October. laying from March - May. It nests on the ground (I added a WS to show the other owl sitting on the nest), usually in rank grass. The nest is a saucer shaped pad made of green and dry grass stems. It is placed under a canopy of grass stems, which are bent over it.

A nice capture of this fine bird.
It looks soft and gentle yet quite fearsome at the same time!
The shot is well taken in this low light,good colours and detail.

The cute factor on these little guys are So high, especially when they make themselves "bigger" as he is doing here. Could never yet nail one in the wild. He is beautiful with the "ears" visible in this shot. "n pragtige foto van hierdie uil, Gerhard.

He looks like the devil with the 'horns'. Very good complete picture in difficult light. Well donr Gerhard.

This owl sure fills the frame well, Gerhard. It look as if posing for you, and the detail and color hues in the plumage are beautifully rendered. I always like to see a sparkle in the eyes like you have it here. The WS makes it a nice "double feature", thanks for sharing ;-)
