Mandarin Duck
Considered by most as the most ornamental of the world's ducks, the Mandarin Duck is a very popular aviary bird and commonly seen in many collections. In the wild, Mandarins can be found in China, Korea, Japan and eastern Siberia.
The drake is one of world's most beautiful ducks and quite unlike any other species. The forehead is glossy greenish-black that turns to purple as it slopes to a crest at the back of the head; the sides of the head are white with chestnut in front of the eyes. The sides of the neck and the cheeks have elongated chestnut feathers that form a mane; the upper breast is maroon, while the lower breast and belly are white. The sides and flanks are brown, finely penciled with black. The most unique features are the wing sails, which are bright orange feathers that stand straight up off his inner wings. The hen greatly resembles a wood duck hen. She is grayer and has a smaller crest and eye ring.
Breeding: Mandarins require nesting boxes to nest in. The breeding season begins in late April when the hen begins to lay her clutch of 8 to 12 eggs that are incubated for about 28 days. The hens are good mothers and will riase her own young if you allow her to. The ducklings grow quickly and are able to fly at 8 weeks. They are able to breed the first year, but fertility is best during the second year.

HI Sebnem, this strange colourful duck again. It doesn't look real. I'm pleased to see his mate, even if she is half-drowned! Good colours and details. TFS

Wow, Sebnem :-) Spring is in the air as we can see on your picture! I don't know if female duck is happy or not? But it isn't big surprise - men never know what women think ;-) Great moment and probably most beautiful genre of ducks.

Great catch, Sebnem. Nature is always a bit ahead of us, so thank you for posting this very evocative way to remind us springtime is coming! Nice clear water colors, just a bit of motion, and good DOF, and the eternal song, "l'amour, toujours l'amour". Very well spotted.

Good picture, this lady is lucky that she only has one male to "please", my mallards had an orgy yesterday ;)

Great shot, love the colours, it looks a bit soft to me. But once again, great moment captured !!

Great capture Sebnem,
They are such colourful ducks.
I posted one yesterday of a sleeping mandarin (now I know why they need their sleep!!)
Nice details, colours and clarity. A good moment to catch.
Great post with good notes.
Thanks for posting

Interesting post, but I think you've done a bit too much removing noise, you lost most of the details on the male.
TFS.

Hi Sebnem, nice shot. Imagine trying to do this with someone pointing the camera at you! Great moment captured here there does seem to be a little plastic effect from noise removal? But that's the least of her worries.

Well done.
