A large moth belonging to the family Notodontidae, Peridea anceps, the Great Prominent. Approx 70 mm wingspan. Caught during day time, as in this picture, it will not try to fly away, but relies instead on camouflage - not quite succesful in this case. By teasing it a bit, you can even persuade it to show some of the white posterior wings, which are normally concealed at rest.
The caterpillar feeds on various deciduous trees. |

Hello Philippe,
thank you for posting a picture of P. anceps which I did not see at TN up to now. Colours and wing patterns are nicely shown. Excellent focus and sharpness. Most suitable point of view.
Several members of the family Notodontidae have been shown in the last weeks. Perhaps, it's time to create a THEME on this family!?
