[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It's the annual butterfly exhibit at Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati. The enclosed exhibit was completely saturated even though we have had no rain for many days. My lens fogged over immediately and took about 15 minutes to clear even though the camera bag had not been in air conditioning.
This is a buckeye, Junonia coenia, a fairly common species reported throughout the continental US except Washington and Montana, according to the Big Sky Institute. There are no reports from South Carolina, but since it's fairly common in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida, I'm guessing that it does not sense the location of state borders.
The wing span is 1.5-2.75 inches (4-7 cm).
The insect overwinters in the southern US. Adults from the south's first brood migrate north in late spring and summer to temporarily colonize most of the United States and parts of southern Canada.

What a magnificent shot, Greg!
The details are so splendid and so marvellous the colors and composition!
You caught this beauty in a perfect angle and with a perfect definition.
Congratulations and TFS

Thanks for sharing your great butterfly image, Greg. It is a very beautiful subject indeed. And it has to be said, you did this photographing job very well. I checked if the flash was fired to verify my idea that it wasn't; and it wasn't.
I thought it was due to the natural light displayed in the image, making the latter so much better.
A minor nit though are the tips of the wings; the latter are generating a little softness due to the aperture. But if I have to choose between a big aperture with shallow depth-of-field and an overall sharp photo with flash, I would definitely go for the former.

It is a very beautiful piece of work from top to bottom.
Great subjet, excellent camera work!
Thanks and regards.

Well, if you are going to post a "Buckeye," then maybe I should post a "Longhorn."

You found a beautiful, unworn speciman. The beautiful colors are so rich and well saturated and natural. Focus is pin sharp over entire butterfly and we can see amazing details. Angle of butterfly and your crop are perfect. And, that is a very nice black and gold frame. [GO TEXAS LONGHORNS!]

Great photo of a really beautiful butterfly.

Hi Greg

Simply beautiful. A first class macro of this stunningly colourful butterfly.

The composition and POV is great with the insect positioned almost on the diagonal line. The colours are splendid and well saturated, the details are amazingly sharp, and the exposure was perfectly managed.

Very well done and TFS.

Beautiful portrait with great colors and sharpness well done TFS regards/Lawhill

Hello Greg.

Excellent picture, very good details and colors.

Jose Luis.

Greg, you did such an excellent job! I took photos at the butterfly exhibit at Krohn and it was not easy to get a good shot with the temperature issues and all of the wounded butterflys! This picture truly shows the beauty of this butterfly in such a great way. Your composition is awewome and the way you've photographed it makes you feel like you can reach out and touch it!
