[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I haven't been able to be about much because of both illness and work, and also haven't managed to get out much with my camera either, so I promised myself that this week I would try to get some more images uploaded to TN, so here is the 1st of them...

A return to the holiday I had in camping wild in Scotland back in February of this year. The weather was amazing (for me), cold, clear and very calm. The overnight temperatures were down to -12C which for the UK is reasonably cold. Being alone, I was able to wander freely, forget about times and when to eat or sleep and just roam happily with my camera...

Very cold conditions produced freezing fog which when it lifted on this Tuesday morning, left lots of trees and the ground covered in a deep hoar frost coating everything in white ice crystals. The conditions made for amazing photography of which this is one of the much later photos when the fog had lifted several hours previously.

There are various types of hoar frost and the type shown here which coated the trees and turned the branches white is an white frost.

From Wikipedia Frost Types.
White frost is a relatively heavy coating of hoar frost with big and interlocking crystals. It forms when the air has a relative humidity above 90% and a temperature below -8 C (18 F).

Taken in RAW, on a tripod and mirror lock up mode on timer (to reduce in camera vibrations and aid sharpness), this picture has had the colours balanced slightly to pull out the greens slightly and has then been cropped, resized and sharpend.

Anyhow - please enjoy.

Hi Emma,

let me be the first to congratulate you on an outstanding shot! The colours and tones here really say only one thing - cold! The stones in the loch in the FG make a nice, bold contrast to the pale, subtle BG and i like the snow capped hill peaking through in the beyond. Great job on the cropping too, it works really well.
Only 4 weeks until i'm back up there...can't wait!

tfs,

Paul

Hi Emma

Sorry to hear you had a hard time lately, but somehow i'm glad you'll be spending a bit more time with us this week :)

Another splendid "frosty" landscape from you and indeed the atmosphere here is different: so clear and lovely that the perspective is amazing!
The details throughout the entire frame are terrific and the contrast and colors everywhere are magnificent!
No point in mentioning the composition anymore when it comes to your shots - it's always a pleasure!

Cheers and TFS
Horia

Hi Emma,
Great to see you post another photo of a frost covered Scotland. It does give the landscape an entirely different look. Great work on the composition, where the shoreline leads the eye nicely into the scenery. I am sure that you weren't that happy with the condition of the sky.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Emma.
This is also very beautiful. I can see how cold it was. Beautiful light and soft colours. Great reflections. Well done.
Regards, Steve.

Hello Emma,
This is calm waters if I ever did see!
Beautiful refelction with the muted winter colours, and a landscape marked by the frost...
Scenery is well composed and with a fine feeling of depth!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Emma!

I DO enjoy it, and not only the picture, but also your notes.

As soon as you sent me your critique I went through your pictures and felt that we have much in common. I can't spend a lot of time on your pictures now, but I will come back to them this evening.

I chose this picture because of its simplicity and the peaceful atmosphere it generates. Usually, one can experience atmospheres like this one only alone in the nature, for example early in the morning or beside touristical seasons or days.

I like the management of the lightning very much: full contrast and full color on the foreground and then both fade out as we go to the background (sorry for my English...). This lightning effect underlines the soft and peaceful atmosphere of that wonderful winter day.

Your picture generates and awakes emotions. That means that the principal aim of it is fully reached!

I'm looking forward to crawling along your other pictures soon!

Kind regards
Markus
