he Gray Wolf (Canis lupus; also spelled Grey Wolf, see spelling differences; also known as Timber Wolf or Wolf) is a mammal in the order Carnivora. The Gray Wolf shares a common ancestry with the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), as evidenced by DNA sequencing and genetic drift studies. Gray wolves were once abundant and distributed over much of North America, Eurasia, and the Middle East. Today, for a variety of human-related reasons, including widespread habitat destruction and excessive hunting, wolves inhabit only a very limited portion of their former range. Though listed as a species of least concern for extinction worldwide, for some regions including the Continental United States, the species is listed as endangered or threatened.

Photo taken in "Blijdorp" Rotterdam.

The Gray Wolf, being a keystone predator, is an important part of the ecosystems to which it typically belongs. The wide range of habitats where wolves thrive reflects their adaptability as a species, and includes temperate forests, mountains, tundra, taiga, and grasslands. In much of the world, with the exception of Northern regions, they are listed as endangered. They continue to be hunted in many areas of the world for their perceived threat to livestock, as well as for sport.

I had to use 1/13 to avoid flash and had to use aperture priority setting at least 6,3 'cause the 1,4 teleconverter was used; to avoid quality loss and also to have the necessary depth of field.
The wolves were pretty wild. Due to the aforementioned and some other reasons as well the keeper ratio was low; guess 1/20. I was satisfied about this one though...

Nice week ahead...

Bonjour Annick,

Hi Annick,

Wonderful shot of the Gray Wolf, I like your composition with the Wolf's head filling the frame, its a lovely pose with a great expression on the Wolfs face, nice detail and great colours too.

TFS Hilary :o)

A really beautiful portrait of the Grey Wolf... Wolves are natural competitors of humans and a war with man is difficult to survive.
Very good light and fur textures.

Hi Annick,
What a superb image of this Wolf. The detail is amazing and the quality of the image is just wonderful. I almost feel like I could reach out and pat it but I don't know that it would be a good idea. Super, thankyou.
