Today an upload of a colorfull demoiselle, although I see them sometimes flying around,I never was able to make a shot of them, now I found a more or less cooperative model,I say more or less, because although the model stayed positioned,I found it in a not so easy spot to place tripod etc and it was a bit windy, anyway I managed to take a few shots, hope you like it

Beautiful Demoiselle
Calopteryx virgo(Linnaeus, 1758)

The Beautiful Demoiselle Calopteryx virgo is a European damselfly. It is often found among fast-flowing waters.

Identification

The male has dark brown-black wingtips with blue veins. Immatures often have much paler browner wings. They have metallic blue-green bodies and blue-green eyes.

The female has dark brown iridescent wings, a white patch near the tip of the wings and a metallic green body with a bronze tip at the abdomen.

Eggs and larvae

Females lay up to 300 eggs at a time on emergent or floating plants, often on water-crowfoot. Like the Banded Demoiselle they often submerge to do so. The eggs hatch after a around 14 days. Also like the Banded Demoiselle the larva is stick-like with long legs and develops over a period of two years in submerged vegetation, plant debris or roots. They usually overwinter in sand or gravel.

Behaviour

Males are territorial, perching in bankside plants and trees. They chase passing insects, often returning to the same perch. Males can stray well away from water, females live away from water unless egg-laying or seeking a mate.

Hoi Paul,
erg gave foto, Paul. Ik heb ze in Polen voor het eerst in grote aantallen gezien. Vind het echt een fantastische soort.

Hi Paul.
Wow, absolutly stunning. The colours and detail, I bet you are rapped with capturing this image. Composition is wonderful, DOF perfect, a hint of softness but still stunning detail.

I think you did really well Paul, looks fine to me.
I like the unusual low-down POV and great DOF.
Great sharpness and contrasts well with the leaf and background.

Hi Paul.
One of the best close-up shot. BRAVO. Pictured scene is simply amazing as well as the quality of the execution and shooting technique. Composition, POV and DOF are great. Lights, colours, sharpness and details are terrific. Esthetically shot is matchless. My congratulations and best wishes.
Alexei.

P.S. I think a lot about macro ring flash and your macro lens 200 mm. This time I experiment a lot with my macro lenses (KM 100 mm and Sigma 70-300 mm Macro) I am sure if shooting distance is more than 50-60 cm macro ring flash is not effective. Minimal focusing distance at Sigma is 95 cm. I never use ring flash with it. Minimal focusing distance at KM 100 mm is 35 cm. (or 15 cm from front lens). Use of ring flash with this lens at short distance is amazing but at long (more than 50-60 cm) distance is not effective at all.

Hi Paul,
