Nigella damascena
Common english names: Love-in-a-mist, Devil in the Bush
Nombres comunes en español: Arañuela, Neguilla de Damasco
-
This beautiful flower, still very young, grows everywhere where I live.
It would be interesting to know the psychological connections between the english names and the plant shape (("Love in a mist" ~ "Devil in the Bush") ~ plant). Hopefully, a TrekNature member knows about it!

Nigella damascena is an annual garden flowering plant, belonging to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae).

It is native to southern Europe (but adventive in more northern countries of Europe), north Africa and southwest Asia. It is also commonly grown in gardens in North America. It is found on neglected, damp patches of land.

The plant's common name comes from the flower being nestled in a ring of multifid, lacy bracts.

It grows to 20-50 cm tall, with pinnately divided, thread-like, alternate leaves.

The flowers are white, pink, pale blue or pale purple, with 5-10 sepals. The actual petals are located at the base of the stamens and are minute and clawed. The sepals are the only colored part of the perianth. The 4-5 carpels of the compound pistil have each an erect style. The flowers blossom in May and June.

The fruit is a large and inflated capsule, growing from a compound ovary, and is composed of several united follicles, each containing numerous seeds. This is rather exceptional for a member of the buttercup family. The capsule becomes brown in late summer.

They are much used in dried flower bouquets.

Hi Jose,
Nice shot, I like the structure of this plant and the natural lines and patterns. Well captured and a good DOF,
regards
Matt.

This is quite an interesting plant, Jose, in which the leaves (if they can be called that) integrate with the flowers in a sort of "symphony" where you cannot segregate one from the other at all.
As usual, the tonal quality in conjunction with your perception of the available light bears your unmistakable signature in this wonderful image.
TFS and best regards.

Hello Jose!
Simple Latin "Nigella" but English "Devil in the Bush" - what an interesting connection! :)
The species looks really interesting, I like a lot shape of its green parts. DOF, details and colours are very good and the POV - as always in your composition - is just amazing! The way you present us different species of plant is really great, so detailed that it is not possible to look at plants at the some way as before :)
Many thanks for showing this photo and have a nice weekend!

Hello Jose,
This is an interesting plant, and it is well framed!
I like the different shades of green, once in a while it is nice to see a flower without shining bright colours...
Good light, and fine details are captured!

Hello Jose,
Très belle lumière sur cette fleur à la forme bien partculière et que je n'avais jamais vue. Je ne comprends pas très bien si elle est une fleur sauvage ou si elle pousse dans des jardins. Comme d'habitude j'ai du retard..
Meilleures salutations

I missed this one while I was away so I am very glad to find it now. I saw many patches of these in Alsace but didn't know they were native. My mother smuggled some seeds back from Germany in the late 1960s (before we knew that this was not a good practise) so that she can grow them in her front garden.
I love your original PoV on these and the colours and details are outstanding

Hi Jose,
Beautiful flower. Nice picture. Thanks for sharing.
I tried to grow this annual in my garden, but it never flowered. The weather of this part of India has very wide variation. By the time the plant is ready to flower, the weather changes to harsh summer and the plant dies.
