Western Pygmy-Blue
Brephidium exilis

I spotted this butterfly flitting around near the end of the Galveston Causeway. It was tiny, even smaller than the Sulfers I usually encounter. It is a Western Pygmy Blue and the smallest butterfly in North America, possibly the World*. On the inside of the wings around the base is a most beautiful shade of blue.

*For reference to scale, this butterfly is roughly the size of my thumbnail.

Frequently I am seeing subjects either clinging or on the edge of things. Perhaps they are not in as much danger as we perceive...they do after all have a built in safety device:-)

Very nice focus, background and contrast.

Wonderful angle in this photo of tiny butterfly. Great POV and excellent DOF. I like the composition and your exposure.

Jim this is a great shot with a very nice effect.
The angle is super and offers a very different pose to many flutterby shots.

Gary

Hello Jim,
this mini-butterfly seems to dressed with velvet, you gave a beautiful light to the wings, and the little flier is well focused.
Good work, have a nice Sunday,
Violetta
