The 3rd hornbill in this mini series. Tocus leucomelas – 55 cm – This is a mugs hot of a Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, taken @Krugersdorp Game Reserve on 13th July 2004 @ 15h13. Anybody who saw the movie - The Lion King – should recognise this hornbill, he was the one with the erratic up and down flight across the savannah. Their bill is much more robust than that of the Red billed Hornbill, with a visible cask on the top mandible. The female has a shorter, predominantly darker bill than the male, with a dark head and throat. Both hornbill species are ground feeders, the slimmer bill of the Red-billed allowing it to probe for food in the ground while the robust Yellow-billed catches prey above ground. Elephant dung is a large source of nutritious food for many insects, especially those who have a larval stage. The bill of the Yellow-billed hornbill is the ideal tool to investigate these food larders. One often encounters them next to the road in KNP, where they are working through the dung with their bill in search of some tasty morsels. ISO 200 @ -1.3 EV; Nikon D70; Sigma 120-300 F2.8 lens and 2X converter @ Focal length 600 mm; 1/640 @ F8; Aperture Mode; no flash, Pattern Metering Mode; Manfrotto Tripod and Wimberley head; cropped to suit, some USM & some Hue & saturation brightness; reduced to Site size. He was in the process of turning his head, when I caught him here. See the WS for over the shoulder view.

Hola Callie: Beautiful to pose of the bird, enigmatic details in their eyes, the plumage is beautiful and interesting, they seem hair instead of feathers, the tones of the feathers to make not think of the skin of some animal in the feathers of a bird. You captured in this bird one it poses with an intellectual touch in the bird, me to want to know that to be seeing the or that to be thinking. Thank you to share this beautiful image with us. Cordial greetings. Saludos Cordiales. Feliz fin de semana. *Ninfa Urania*

Another nightmare you're giving me! It's almost like when the animals were made there were some spare crab claws, bird heads and glue left over. Very nice composition and the details, DOF and exposure are spot on. Well done.

Callie, Very good work on this "artistic" portrait of the Hornbill. You've brought it all together in this one. The eye is almost mesmerizing! This is a great one, no doubt!!

Callie, Strange creatures these Hornbills. Nice shot again. I like the fact that this one blends into the background.
