This was taken at the Edwardsville Watershed Nature Center. I was out in the early evening after work trying to get some new photos for my "Illinois Wild Flowers" portfolio. I had to battle some breezy conditions, so I upped the ISO to keep my shutter spped and DOF where I needed it. These are tiny flowers, only about 1/2 inch across. The OOF backround flower is a Black-Eyed Susan.

Daisy Fleabane
Erigeron strigosus
Aster family (Asteraceae)

Description: This native annual or biennial plant is erect and up to 3' tall. It is largely unbranched, except for a few side stems near the inflorescence at the apex. The ridged central stem has spreading white hairs near the base, but these hairs become short and appressed along its middle and upper portions. The alternate leaves are up to 4" long and 2/3" across, becoming smaller and more sparsely distributed as they ascend the stems. They are usually oblanceolate (shaped like a narrow spoon), narrowly ovate, or linear. Some of the larger leaves may have a few coarse teeth toward their outer tips. The base of each leaf narrows gradually to a slender petiole-like base.
The upper stems terminate in small clusters of daisy-like compound flowers and their buds. The buds have appressed fine hairs that are difficult to see. The compound flowers are about ˝" across, consisting of about 40-100 ray florets that surround numerous disk florets. The tiny disk florets are yellow, while the ray florets are usually white (sometimes light violet or pink). The blooming period occurs primarily from late spring to mid-summer, and lasts about 1-2 months. However, some plants may bloom later in the year until the early fall. The flowers may have a mild fragrance. Both the ray and disk florets can set fertile seed without cross-pollination. The small achenes enclosing the seeds have small bristles or white hairs that promote distribution of the seeds by wind. The root system consists of a taproot. This plant spreads by re-seeding itself, and often forms loose colonies.

We seldom see flower pictures from you, Scott, so this is a wonderful and beautiful surprise, my friend.
The image is a sheer feast of colors for the eyes. It is very artistically composed and the tiny daisy looks amazingly beautiful against the kind of BG you seem to have chosen with extreme care.
Thanks for sharing this heart-warming picture and best regards.

Hi Scott,
Simple beauty at its best :)
When one considers the size and the conditions you faced, a superb effort.

Hi Scott.
What a wonderful artistic shot and great effect of BG flower. Superb composition and amazing colour palette. Lighting is wonderful too. Details of the main subject, blurriness if the BG are excellent. Bravo and TFS.

Hi Scott,

How wonderful to see a tribute to the daisy! A marvelous composition with the fresh flower and new bud in the center and the older ones on the side. I love the Black Eyed Susan for the background.

Hi Scott, :)

Such a beautiful surprise from you today, absolutely love your composition! Wonderful attention to detail, and the Black Eyed Susan in the BG does an amazing job showing off your Daisy's. Perfect sharpness and OOF BG, make this splendid. Well done my friend.

Please do take your time responding, I totally value your time and opinion. Have a safe trip, and enjoy.

Hi Scott!
Guuaaauu (wooww) it´s a superbbb shot!!! I love the composition, with the very nice tiny flower in front and the other big one out of focus in BG.Perfect exposure, nice colours, maybe a little bit soft in the center of the main flower but almost without interest.

Hello Scott,
I think it will be fair to say that Daisy owes to Susan in this photo, for it is that big beautiful yellow in the backdrop that makes this work. Your use of telephoto macro is ingenious. The compressed view produces a magnificent composition. Great work!

Hello Scott,
Nice closeup of this tiny flowers. They look similar to some flowers we have in Poland. Who knows, maybe they were introduced to Europe once.
Cool composition with the Rudbeckia in the background (this one we have in Europe for sure :-)).
Best greetings,

Hi Scott,
A wonderful capture of this little daisy!
I like very much the concept of the picture, and thus the framing&composition done.
I love the presence of the yellow flower at the background, it really worked great!
Excellent the DOF and clear details got on the buds, the opening and the open flower.
My compliments and thanks for share it.
Best regards,

Hi Scott,
Simply beautiful composition with the out of focus flower for a backdrop for the white daisy. Brilliant work scott, thanks for sharing.

Great offset of the fleabane against the black-eyed Susan!
I can never get enough of the symmetries that we see in daisies! The spirals in the centre are always a suprise!

Tfs Scott, Jay

Hi Scott,
That BG makes the photo really special. Its like a flower photo within a flower photo. Great work on the DOF and exposure, getting maximum result on the details and colors. I've tried some flower shots myself with a bit of wind and really understand how difficult this is.

Hello Scott,
One could never guess that this daisy is so tiny! Your sharp and well composed shot would suggest a flower twice the size. Great contrasting BG and nice to see it in various stages of development.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Scott, you do great in shooting flowers too.

Excellent dof, colors and saturation. I enjoy composition too.

Well done.

Very effective image Scott, This flower looks as though it's popping right out of my screen, probably has a lot to do with the aperature setting. I also like that soft blurred yellow in the background. I almost want to water the screen, but then it would probably short out my computer so instead I got an extension for my monitor to the computer and placed the screen out in the garden and all the bees visit your flower. Super nice job! :)

It just shows that the simpliest of subjects can look stunning. The simple colour range (yellow, white and black) is very striking. The light is lovely. DOF and sharpness are very good

We have those little beauties here as well! I think that all flowers are wonderful, especially wild ones. I like this picture a lot for its good exposure, beautiful details and very interesting DOF with great BG. Well done with those superb non-flying flowers :)

Very nicely done, Scott. The planning had led to an almost 3D effect with the daisy in front of the yellow bg. All the teachnical stuff seems wonderful (good job with the wind, too, one of my big bains).
