Ardea cinerea is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in the milder south and west, but many birds retreat in winter from the ice in colder regions.

It is a large bird, standing 90-100 cm tall, with a 175-195 cm wingspan and a weight of 1-2 kg. Its plumage is largely grey above, and off-white below. Adults have a white head with a broad black supercilium and slender crest, while immatures have a dull grey head. It has a powerful pinkish-yellow bill, which is brighter in breeding adults. It has a slow flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks.

Taken in Artis, Amsterdam. Just like me, the heron liked the scenery.

Hello Annick !
What a great portrait of this bird ! I have seen many, in my region, but never managed to get a good picture like this one. Excellent details, beautiful colors, nice blured BG, and I also like the traditional pose of the heron. So typical from these birds. I thinks the delicate green BG work very well with the rey color of the plumage. Very well done !
Valerie.

Great close up!
The details of the plumage are amazing.

Nice close up of a very shy bird, it's a shame but you have realy over sharpened the picture.

Hello Annick,
You made good use of the tameness of this Amsterdam Heron by taking what I think is a fine portrait, with good sharpness, lighting and composition and set in a fine contrasting BG.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Annick,
an amazing capture.
How did you get so close?
I think it's been cropped a bit tight in front of the beak but otherwise it's stunning.
Well done,
Joey

Very nice heron portrait. Excellent close-up for 200mm lens. Nice details. Perfect exposure. Outstanding DOF and pleasing background.

Beautiful Portrait of the gray one! It really is a twin to the American Great Blue Heron, slight color difference aside.
Great Detail on a perfect background! Bravo, Annick!

Magnifique gros plan, détails superbes.
Bravo
Marie
