This female Mountain Bluebird was captured in Cypress Hills Provincial Park carrying nesting material to a bluebird box.
Mountain Bluebird
Sialia currucoides
General Description

By Gustave J. Yaki

The Mountain Bluebird breeds in western North America, south from southeast Alaska and Yukon, to northern Mexico. One pair was found nesting in the High Arctic at Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island in Nunavut in 1995. Probably (except for the far northern part of Alberta) Mountain Bluebirds occupy suitable habitat throughout most of the province.

Attracted to farm yards and ranches where grasses are short, especially where nestboxes are available, the first spring migrants begin appearing in mid March. Autumn migration is an extended affair. Flocks assemble in mid August and most have departed by late September. Usually, however, there are some that linger to late October and sometimes into November. It is possible that some birds try to overwinter, as one was seen on 19 January 2002 near Stettler.

Mountain Bluebird feed mainly on insects, spiders or other invertebrates, which they glean from short ground vegetation. Unlike other bluebirds, they often hunt by hovering, obviously inspecting the ground below for any potential food item. During the autumn, winter and early spring, they also feed on berries.

Nesting is as per the Eastern Bluebird. In addition to using nest boxes and holes in trees, they also use cavities in the eroded soils as along the Red Deer River such as at Dinosaur Provincial Park. The five to six eggs are mainly incubated by the female for about 13 days. Both adults feed the young. Most birds will produce two broods, sometimes three in a season

Hello Rick,
This is a very fine shot of a female Bluebird with nesting material. It has all the right technical qualities: sharpness, lighting, BG. The pose is nice too. Maybe I would not have composed it with so much space on the right, but I guess that's a matter of taste.
Thanks for sharing,
Best wishes, Ivan

Great shot with excellent DOF and sharpness. I really like the composition here, as well as the notes.

A thematically significant and technically superb picture of the Bluebird, Rick.
I like the way you have placed the subject in one corner of the frame. It is very appealing in terms of an imaginative composition.
The picture is perfect in every other respect.
TFS and regards.
