Spur-winged Goose ♂
Plectropterus gambensis

Also known as: Afr: Wildemakou, Ger: Sporengans, Fre: Oie-armée de Gambie.

Scientific Explained: gambensis: after Gambia, a country in West Africa. plectropterus: Greek pl(ktron, a spur or spear point; pteron, a feather or wing.

It’s a very large bird (males +\- 1m); boldly pied; mainly black with variable amount of white on face and belly. The forehead, bill and legs are red. Males are larger than females. Usually quiet birds but do utter a high-pitched rather wheezy cherwit in flight and when alarmed. Female are usually silent, but has high-pitched, rapid chi-chi-chi-chi when alarmed.

They can be found in Africa south of Sahara. In SA mainly absent from dry west. They frequent mainly larger inland waters, floodplains, pans, dams, sewage ponds.

These geese are highly gregarious when not breeding, especially during moult. Flocks number up to 2000 birds. Usually found in pairs on smaller bodies of water when breeding. They rests on shorelines and sandbanks; forages in flooded grasslands, pastures, cultivated fields in early morning, evening or at night. Flocks fly in staggered lines, sometimes in V-formation; wings make swishing sound in flight. When disturbed, flies to nearest water, settling far from shore.

It eats grass shoots and seed, grain, lucerne, tubers (like potatoes), fruit, aquatic plants. Sometimes damages crops if numbers large enough.

If the bare facial skin extends to behind eye it’s a male. The skin is confined to base of bill and fore cheek in females. Immature birds have a feathered face; body feathers browner and white areas less extensive.

I have included another photo as a WS to show the spur on the tip of the wing. I hope you like this cowboy.
