[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Jackfruit trees are native to SW India and Sri Lanka. This particular tree was the most prolific of several I saw in Kerala, India. Fruits are large, comparable to the size of a large watermelon. When cut open, there are hundreds of little fruits inside - each the size of a kiwi. The structure is similar to a very magnified Pomegranate.
Jackfruit is a popular food in Kerala. It can be eaten ripe or cooked when unripe.
There is considerable variation in the number of fruits that Jackfruit trees produce. There is a saying in Kerala that translates to: "If desired, Jackfruit will grow on the roots of the tree". This is roughly equivalent to the English saying: "Where there's a will, there's a way". |

Hi John, what an unusual tree, but what do you mean by: each the size of a kiwi? Do you mean kiwifruit, or the kiwi bird???
I have never seen fruit like this before. Did you eat some?
Thank you for sharing
Janice
It is great to see Jackfruit hanging on its tree. The scientific documentary quality of this photo is great. But there is an artistic quality as well, in the sense of proportion. The size of Jackfruit seems very large in the market place, but even more so here, hanging on the tree. Well done.

Hello John.
Good shot from Kerala, my land..
ARE YOU FROM KERALA?
Your notes make me ask this...
The mention about "venamengil chakka veerilum kaayikkum" ("If desired, Jackfruit will grow on the roots of the tree") is noticing..
TFS.
