White-faced Heron
Egretta novaehollandiae / formerly Ardea novaehollandiae novaehollandiae

The bird was quite a way away, and this was the best I could do. . .

Self introduced from Australia the White-faced Heron is now the most common heron having benefited from the widespread conversion of forest to farmland.

This slim bluish-grey heron has a white face, chin and upper throat, and a black bill and greenish-yellow legs. Strap-shaped plumes are long and pale grey on the back and short and pinkish brown on the chest. The call is a guttural croak.

The diet is fish, frogs and tadpoles, aquatic and pasture insects, spiders, earthworms and mice.

Breeding is between June and February with the peak about October. The nest is an untidy bundle of sticks and twigs usually high up in large trees. Both adults incubate for about 26 days and usually 2 chicks are raised and fed by both parents.

Hi Janice.
Great stand you captured with good detail and colour. There has been some image quality lost in the crop but still good detail.
We have heaps of these herons here on the coast, maybe thats where all our frogs are going, food.

Hello Janice,
I bacame familiar with and took an instant liking to the White-faced Heron when we visited Australia. You have captured this one very nicely in breeding plumage that contrasts well against the green BG. Great composition and sharpness.
TFS ans best wishes, Ivan

Hi Janice

The white-faced heron does not frequent around this (my) part of the world so it is always great to see a posting of one of them. You did well to capture this one although (as you said) it was quite a distance away from you.

I like your composition with sufficient space for the bird to stare at or walk in to. The colours are well saturated and the details (although a tad soft) still came out quite well defined. The green grass provided a nice BG to compliment the lovely blue/grey bird and the exposure was well controlled to bring out lovely contrasts in the white face and the grey body.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. Almost time for our "B" team to teach the mighty All Blacks a rugby lesson (chuckle). Nah, just joking. Those poor "little" Springboks will be like "like lambs led to the slaughterhouse". I think it's going to be a painful experience for us...

I hope you have nice winter. The summer is coming back up here
with heat and sunny weather, I hope it will last.
Have a great week.

bonjour janice
cette aigrette ressemble beaucoup au heron qu'il y a par ici,la netteté est assez bonne,et je vous dit bravo pour ce gros plan car ces oiseaux sont souvent assez farouche.

Hello Janice,
a wonderful heron, with a sharp and rich plumage. He seems more blue than grey, and you captured him in a position that shows him very well.
Wishes,
Violetta

Hi Janice
This is a very nice capture of this Heron. I spend a lot of time at the wildlife Refuge where I live and see a lot of Herons there. I know how hard they are to get close to. You did a great job here. Nice color, sharpness, detail and exposure. Well done and TFS
Tom
