Hi everyone.
Excuse my lack of creativity in naming this picture: I have another picture uploaded on TN with the same title. Anyway, I feel that it is the best title for this picture as well.

This shot is of a Moldavian Meadow Viper (Vipera ursinii moldavica), probably the most endangered european snake and one of the most endangered venomous snakes in the world. I took this picture on the 14th of april 2006 in a "natural reserve"(it doesn't deserve to be called that) near the city of Iasi. I was extremely angry at the end of that day because even if I found a total of 8 meadow vipers something was not right. Of the 8 meadow vipers we found on that day, 2 were found mating and one was found DEAD. Actualy, the sheppard that killed the snake brought it to us and happily sayd that he crushed its head. Imagine that ! The local authorities wouldn't have done s**t about it. The only thing I could do was to shout at the ignorant sheppard...I actualy managed to scare him pretty bad.

The specimen in the picture is an adult female that got just a little bit to much of me taking its picture and started to perform quite an act to try to scare me.

Vipera ursinii moldavica (Moldavian Meadow Adder):

- Probably the rarest snake in Europe, occuring only in Iasi county (Romania), represented by only 2 known populations.

-They reach a maximum lenght of about 60 cm, averaging at about 40-50 cm.

-They feed mostly on insects, small rodents and lizards.

-They emerge from hibernation in late march or early april. Very soon after emergense, they mate and in august-september they give birth to probably around 10 live young. Like most vipers, it is an ovoviviparous species.

I hope you guys enjoy this picture of this extremely rare animal.

hello alex,
the snakes looks scarry, the focus is perfect, very nice dof, the pov is very suitable for snake shot, well composed shot,
tfs & regards

nice dof alex!
and great pov!

stunning shot of deadly viper, great moment catch, well done

don't be too hard on the shepard. with his work he could get killed by the snake. it's easy for us who don't have to work in close proximity to dangerous animals to want to protect them but it's another thing to ask people to accept the risk as part of their daily job.

nice focus good DOF nice composition good colors

Hi Alex!
I have a short break after field studies in Spala Landscape park and before trip to Macedonia so there is some time for TN ;>
This portrait is really splendid! It looks that you were very close to this viper - the snake looks very dangerous :)
It is really nice to see this picture also because I had no luck to see it when I was in Romania :)
Have a nice evening and TFS,

Excellent portrait of this neat little viper. It is a pity that the tounge isn't sharp, but otherwise I love the shot.

Hi Alex,
Well you caught this one at the perfect moment. No I wouldn't like to stand on it or even be as close as what you were. Great image with fine detail. The snake does have lovely patterns which can be seen well. It is so sad when people are so ignorant.

Nothing wrong with the title, but you also gould have called it "Ssssssssssssss....Back of" ore somaething like that :)
Great capture with the tongue downwards, wich is'nt a very good sign for those who are to near.
Sharpness, clarity and DOF are excellent and the details and natural envoirement are wonderful.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a great weekend.
Kindest regards, Harry
