There is hardly a more diverse family of birds in the world than the Cuculidae. The variety ranges from parasitic songsters that lay their eggs in the nests of other birds (the classic Old World cuckoo) to large & rangy ground-feeders like the Guira Cuckoo of southern South America (above) to secretive beasts whose gurgling "waterbottle" calls can dominate an African landscape, such as the Burchell's Coucal. The biodiversity in this group may support the growing feeling among ornithologists that the wonderfully strange birds which comprise the current "family" should more properly separated into four to six different families. The relationship of the groups of these birds to each other is still very uncertain.

It's a "bird of eastern tropical South America in the cuckoo family, Cuculidae. It is 40 cm (16 inches) long, with gray-brown streaked body, short frowsy crest, and a thinner bill than that of its close relatives, the anis. Guiras live in small flocks in grasslands and feed on grasshoppers and other insects. Guiras, like anis, give off a strong, pungent odour".

Hi Livio,

A spectacular capture of this fascinating looking bird. Perfect timing to catch him with that look on his face and the prey in his beak. The wide open eye and the crest is amazing. Excellent lighting, marvelous colors, razor sharp details and a wonderful setting. I would love to see one of these!

Hello Livio,
This week I placed a photo of this bird from a birdpark, but this is so much better! What an expression! Great sharpness, brilliant colours, focus and DOF. Perfect light and composition. I have only two points to give.

Hola Livio,
Una muy buena, excelente foto, con el pirincho o anu branco devorando una pobre ranita. Impresiona ese ojo bien abierto, parece algo endemoniado y loco!
los detalles están perfectos

Weird bird, and poor frog! Very sharp and great exposure against the light still keeping all the tones right in the bird!

Ola Livio.

A great capture, very pleasing to see, well captured with good timing,POV,the colors and sharpness are great, tfs

Hallo Livio
What a remarkable bird! The characteristics and personality captured is great. I have never seen such a bird. The colour of the eye is so captivating and the expression on its face is priceless. All details captured are displayed so well, and I just love the straight in the air “feather-do”. Focus, sharpness and overall presentation is flawless. I had to add it to my favourites. The frog in the bird’s mouth is an additional bonus and rounds of this delightful image. Thanks for sharing. At the time you posted this one, I was not part of Trek Nature, but I am glad I stumbled across it at this moment.
Best regards.
