[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was playing with the composition and tried to make a different butterfly shot to normal. This is the product. Hope you like it :)

The European peacock - or simply Peacock - (Inachis io) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe and Asia. It is the only member of the genus Inachis which is sometimes included in Nymphalis. It should not be confused or classified with the "American peacocks" in the genus Anartia; these are not close relatives of the present species. The peacock butterfly is resident in much of its range, often wintering in buildings or trees. It therefore often appears quite early in spring.


Left hindwing ocellusThe butterfly measures about 5 cm (2 in) from wingtip to wingtip and is easily identified by its striking eye pattern on a ruddy background, although with wings closed the cryptically coloured dark underwings make it look like a dead leaf. The eyespots are reminiscent of those on the feathers of a peacock, hence the name. The eyespots are exposed when the butterfly is disturbed by a potential predator (such as birds) in an antipredator display in which the butterflies flick their wings open and make a hissing noise. The open wings create a startling display (note how a glance at the image can give the impression of a cat staring) and the effect is strong enough to deter the predator from eating it, at least for some time which the butterfly would use to escape.(Stevens 2005)

The butterfly hibernates over winter before laying its eggs in early spring, in batches of up to 500 at a time. The caterpillars, which are shiny black with six rows of barbed spikes and a series of white dots on each segment, hatch after about a week and feed on nettles and hops. The adult butterflies drink nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants, including buddleia, sallows, dandelions, wild marjoram, danewort, hemp agrimony, and clover; they also utilize tree sap and rotten fruit.

The Peacock can be found in woods, fields, meadows, pastures, parks, and gardens, and from lowlands up to 8,200 feet elevation. It is a relatively common butterfly seen in many European parks and gardens.

Hi Joe,
definately works IMO, the colours of the BG are beautiful and the pose you've caught this Butterfly in shows off it's markings to their fullest. Great shot.

we should keep on experimenting so that we can learn form each new click of the camera, some times experiments yields unexpected results and here your experiment came as delight to us,

i really liked the point of view and the different composition. the colours are well saturated, sharpness is very good, nice focus, liked the dof which resulted in non distracting background,

this butterfly is resting on the lantana flowers and I have made a theme of butterflies resting on lantana.

Joe, Nice to test the POV when I saw your picture in the gallery I was wondering what you are upto. I totally agree with Pankaj Dada. I also try and post different view and different birds. May be someone has not seen. Not a bad shot. May be little more brightness and contrast needed (My opinion) Ganesh

THis works well Joe. It does make a change from the usual butterfly shot.

I read somewhere that as an photography exercise, particularly since most of us are using digital it would be cheap - find one subject and photograph it 50 different ways. You're doing great with your photography anyway!
This is very interesting - I like the colors, composition, and depth of field.

Hi Joe,

I like it! Besides just being a pretty butterfly it is a pretty picture. Beautiful colors, nice details on the Peacock on the pretty flowers.

Hi Joe. Got one myself last night. yours shows good detail and colour. They have very nice markings which you have captured well. as you say you were playing with the compostion. but it has worked for me. well done TFS. good notes too.

Wonderful shot of the European Peacock butterfly and the unusual POV works great here. The light and shadow play looks beautiful and the subjects stands out well against the BG. Superb composition and a different perspective well presented. Kudos.
