Hopefully the 1st of several images from a day out to a wildlife reserve near Fakenham in North Norfolk called Pensthorpe based around a large acreage of reclaimed Gravel pit one part of which has become a wildlife park for water birds including some breeding programs for the reintroduction of rarities like the CornCrake and the European Crane of which the they have a free flying flock, so amazing to see these large birds in flight. http://www.pensthorpe.com/ worth a look at.
They have a breeding collection of 7 species of Crane and the Gray Crowned Crane Balearica Regulorum is one of the better know and probably least endangered of them. At home in the plains and swamps of southern Africa the food is the usual one of amphibians lizards, insects and some small mammals. The golden plumes on the back of the head make this an easy one to identify.
Hope you like as there could be plenty more as I shot 9Gb of Raw images on the day not inclueding the ones I deleted during the day. great day out light not brilliant but plenty of willing subjects not hidden behind nasty wire.

Hello Rob,

What a great post of this striking crane. The colors are beautiful and the exposure is so perfect and even throughout frame. Excellent details. This profile view was perfect for this subject to really show off it's distinctive crown. What a perfect eye. The more I look the better I like it.

Hi Robb,
Lovely shot of this exotic African bird ... an avian punk I see.
Hope the floods haven't affected your area.
I've been watching the disaster unfold on BBC world.
I hope Paul and the Oxford lads are not faring too badly.
Have you heard from them ?
