Fireweed or (mainly in Britain) Rosebay Willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the willowherb family Onagraceae. It is native throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere.

This herb is often abundant in wet calcareous to slightly acidic soils in open fields, pastures, and particularly burned-over lands; the name Fireweed derives from the species' abundance as a coloniser on burnt sites after forest fires. Its tendency to quickly colonize open areas with little competition, such as sites of forest fires and forest clearings, makes it a clear example of a pioneer species.

Plants grow and flower as long as there is open space and plenty of light, as trees and brush grow larger the plants die out, but the seeds remain viable in the soil seed bank for many years, when a new fire or other disturbance occurs that opens up the ground to light again the seeds germinate.

The young shoots were often collected in the spring by Native American people and their elderly folk and mixed with other greens. They are best when young and tender; as the plant matures the leaves become tough and somewhat bitter. The southeast Native Americans use the stems in the stage. They are peeled and eaten raw.

In Alaska, candies, syrups, jellies, and even ice cream are made from fireweed. Monofloral honey made primarily from fireweed nectar is distinctive with a spiced flavor.

Hi Pablo,
I specially like this flower/landscape photo that shows both subjects in a complementary way. A nice palette from live green to blue and a touch of pink colour. Great composition and frame as usual.
TFS, José M.

Hello Pablo,

That is a beautiful composition of colours. Everything to what nature to offer has, have caught you in this shot. But, I had more taken the valley, and not so many flowers. The flowers predominate a bit. Nice frame. A beautiful landscape. Regards and TFS Bob

Hi Pablo,
2 for the price of one... a lovely landscape and a great portrait of a beautiful looking plant too. The green grass looks very inviting on the right and lets the eye gently move to the interesting looking BG. Lots to look at here.

Hello Pablo,
A wonderful mixture of fine landscape and beautiful flowers. A wonderful composition where the flowers sticking to the frame worked out perfectly. It gave great depth the hillside country in the back. The sunlight illuminated the flowers beautifuly. A very creative idea of composing the flowers in the composition.

A wonderful and most scenic landscape with great composition and beautiful flowers. The details are very good and so are the exposure and colors.

You managed some well saturated natural colors in this shot Pablo. I like the strong foreground interest. Good exposure and sharpness. All that fireweed looks like home to me.

Evelynn : )

A truly divine view of the valley from this perspective, Pablo.
You are a magician landscape artist, my friend.
The framing is so very beautiful it leaves me breathless with joy.
Thanks for making my day and warm regards.

beautiful Pablo,
the balance is nice in the shot, the light is hard, the composition is wel taken and the work you did is good, fine photojob.

Hi Pablo, I'm not sure if I've seen this or not in Canada, though if it's a common weed then I probably have. When I saw it in your thumbprint I thought it might be purple strife. I like how you've placed these flowers up against that valley scene as your backdrop, and held the valley, hills and sky in good focus with your depth of field.

Thanks, John

Hi Plabo,

Hi Pablo,
wonderful POV you choose to show us this lovely piece of nature. Love those ping flowers in the FG, left enough space on the right to draw the eye to the panorama in the back ground.
Very well composed summer shot.

Hi Pablo.
What a colourful. full of lights and colours, freshness and life pastoral picture. Bravo. I like selected view, POV and DOF very much. They are the best as well as the composition and cropping. High art work. My congratulations.

hello pablo,

Rosebay Willowherb is very undervalued. It makes a very colourful f/g to your shot! It is almost like a curtain parting so that the rest of the scene can be viewed and enjoyed! Lovely colours and composition my friend!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Pablo,
This is a great image of this Fireweed and the scenery behind is glorious too. Just lovely.

Charmant paysage bien composé.

Hi again, Pablo!
Hereabouts these fireweeds have all gone to smoke, except around the roads of the highest mountains. Placing their pink cloud in the left corner makes the composition very eye catching.

Hi Pablo, lovely landscape with splendid flowers, wonderful colors and excellent sharpness, great DOF, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Pablo,
this is a fine looking capture of the fireweed with the colour and focus bang on the money. The note you have included is interesting especially the bit about how it is used as a food item,I never knew it could be used in that way.Tfs. bob

Hello Pablo!
Beautiful photo, this fireweed looks very similar to plants I have growing down on our beach..I'll have to examine the leaves closer to see if its one and the same. I like the composition with the bright flowers in the foreground leading to the amazing landscape of those lush mountains. Makes me long to be in Vermont...oh right I'll be there on Friday! yeah!

rosebay willowherb
there is a lot over here on the moors and countryside..its called the scourge of scotland as well..iirc
nice simple shot with a good lead in to the distant backdrop of subdued hills and a summery sky..
greatest threat over here now is the japanese knot weed..it is hard to kill, is very invasive, and likes any where to live
