This is a shot of an imature Bald Eagle wich I did take just a minute after Just Before Touch Down
The juvenile does try to intimidate the mature eagle by shooting out loudly.
It seemed to work for a few seconds, but after a bad look from the mature one the youngster did shut his big mouth :)

Just after sunrise, ten to nine in the morning of Wednesday the 15th of March 2007.
Wonderful sunrise with soft warm color tones in the sky wich was a great joy to look at and the Bald Eagles seemed to like it also.
Many of them were around that morning although temperatures were not that high with -25 degrees Celcius, without the wind chill reading.

The Nikon TC-17E Tele Extender was attached between lens and camera wich gave focal lenght of 340mm.

ISO Speed reading 400.

----------------------------------------------------------

From baldeagleinfo.com

There are an estimated 7,066 nesting pairs of bald eagles, due to the efforts of federal agencies, tribes, state and local governments, conservation groups, universities, corporations, and thousands of individuals.

Nests - The shape of the eagle nest or aerie is determined mainly by the branch point where it's built. Sticks placed in tree forks result in cylindrical or conical shaped nests. Disk shaped nests are built on the ground or a tree branch which is nearly level. Bowl shaped nests occur where the tree trunk branches off into smaller upright branches.
Bald eagles build their nests in large trees near rivers or coasts. A typical nest is around 5 feet in diameter. Eagles often use the same nest year after year. Over the years, some nests become enormous, as much as 9 feet in diameter, weighing two tons. Even when a nest tree falls or a strong wind blows a nest down, the established pair usually rebuilds at or near the site within a few weeks if it is near the breeding season. The nest may be built in a tree, on a cliff, or even on the ground if there are no other options available.

Eagles are territorial during nesting season. They will keep other eagles out of their own nesting area. Their nesting territory is usually one to two square miles.

Sexual maturity - An eagle reaches sexual maturity at around four or five years of age. At that time, the eagle's energies become concentrated on the effort of finding a mate and raising offspring. Bald eagles mate for life, but when one dies, the survivor will not hesitate to accept a new mate.
During breeding season, both birds protect the nest territory from other eagles and predators.

Thanks in advance for viewing and comments. Much appreciated.
Best wishes and have a nice day,
Harry

Hi Harry,
details, POV, focus, low golden lighting etc are all perfect, but it's the timing that makes this an exceptional shot. You are setting a very high standard.
Paul

Hello Harry,

A great dramatic shot! Beautifully composed and using the light well!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Harry,
Alweer zo'n super foto.
Groeten,
Niek

This picture cries out for a caption contest. Your title of "Intimidation" is perfect. If you would enter it, I'm sure this would be a contest winner.

Wonderful light - you're right! Great poses captured with superb clarity! Though I doubt the title a little - looks to me as if the young demands feeding... ;)

Hi Harry,
Excellent pose, pov, composition and moment.
TFS, José M.

Hello Harry,

It is so difficult to find a picture from your gallery to comment on! Your wildlife gallery is one of the best I've seen on TN. I've chosen this one for the reasons explained below.

Composition:

Composition could not have been done better. It is simple, with no distracting objects and well distributed empty space. The background is perfect to isolate the eagles. What makes it so special? It's the action of the birds and the unrepeatable moment when it was taken. Great job!

Colors:

The colors are natural ad well rendered in the soft morning light. The white balance was also well adjusted to show the warm color tones.

Contrast:

Excellent contrast in the foreground! It defines better the great details in the foreground. Also, note the well distribution of contrast between foreground and background.

Exposure:

The light was very well controlled! You exposed the scene perfectly to preserve the details in both dark and white plumage. The early morning light created soft shadows that don't hide the details.

Focus:

The accurate focus on the birds rendered sharp details throughout the subjects. DOF wasn't so much of a concern since the background was the plain blue sky.

As I said before, an absolutely amazing picture! The frame is also appropriate for this shot. Thank you for sharing!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Wonderful composition - so much to see in this photo. Fabulous! Great lighting and wonderful color and sharpness. Another masterpiece. Your gallery is amazing!

This is really well taken Harry - you managed to capture both birds with interesting postures, and I like the interaction between them.
Maybe the immature bird was begging for food, but either way the adult doesn't look too impressed!
I'm amazed how close you managed to get to these birds - even with the 70-200 and teleconverter you can't have been very far away.
The smudgy defocused clouds are a slight distraction, but not enough to worry about.
This is an excellent shot Harry, well done.

Cheers,
Ben

Woww! Wonderful

This is a wonderful action shot with beautiful morning light. I think the babies get spoiled and expect to be fed even when they are about the same size as parents. I saw a Raven youngster, as large as mom, badger the heck out of the parent until it was fed something. It was quite rough. Another spoiled teenager with an attitude. : )

TFS a beautiful shot.
