Large White (Pieris brassicae)

Scientific classification

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Family: Pieridae
Subfamily: Pierinae
Tribe: Pierini
Genus: Pieris
Species: P. brassicae

The Large White or Cabbage White (Pieris brassicae) is a butterfly in the family Pieridae. The butterfly is called the Large Cabbage White in India. It is closely related to the smaller Small White or Small Cabbage White (Pieris rapae). This one was rather large so I think the ID is correct.

Appearance, behaviour and distribution

The Large White is common throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia to the Himalayas often in agricultural areas, meadows and parkland. It is a strong flyer and the British population is reinforced in most years by migrations from the continent. Its wingspan is 5 to 6.5 cm.

The wings are white, with black tips on the forewings of both males and females, the female also has two black spots on each forewing. The underside is a pale greenish and serves as excellent camouflage when at rest. The black markings are generally darker in the summer brood.

Lifecycle and foodplants

The female lays batches of 20 to 100 yellow eggs on plants in the cabbage family and can be a pest on food crops. They seem to have a preference for cultivated varieties of Brassica oleracea such as cabbage and brussel sprouts. The caterpillars are yellowish green with yellow lines and black spots and feed in groups in plain view on the leaf surface. They gain protection from predators by obtaining distastful mustard oils from their foodplants although large numbers are sometimes lost to the parasitic wasp Apanteles glomeratus. The chrysalis is also yellowish green with black spots. The species over-winters as a chrysalis. It has two broods in a year, the first is on the wing in May and June and the second in August.

Photo Location

I took this picture on the beautiful Agios Gordis Beach in Kerkyra, Greece. The weather was fine, clear sky, almost no wind and the atmosphere was kind of hazy, sometimes with invisible horizon line. This caused the sunlight to be rather diffuse yet still strong. The temperature was about 42 degr. Celsius. This butterfly came out of nowhere while I was photographing the Cleopatra butterfly and the Silver-washed Fritillary. This is a very common butterfly but I thought it was a must have for any photographer who loves butterflies. Besides, I think a good photographer doesn't necessarily need an extraordinary subject to take a good picture. On the contrary, he proves his value by creating art from a common subject. Well, I didn't want to prove anything. Just wanted to add a new species to my butterfly collection and share it with you. I hope you like this! I did the best I could!

Hello Eduard, what a wonderfull macro-shot realy well composed, perfect focus with many details, marvellous and lovely colors and a superb background,
cheer,
Pat

The subject and flower against that wonderful dark OOF background is just wonderful, Eduard. The flash really worked well here... not over-lighting the subject and darkening the background. Sharpness, color saturation, and exposure are all excellent.

Hi Eduard,
Outstanding shot with such lovely colours and sharp details. Perfect lighting the the exposure is flawless as well as marvellous. You have captured a majestic pose on the colourful lantanas. A precise DOF lets the subjects stand out from the darkish BG and a great POV to portray it. Superb composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Guten Abend, Eddie.
Peter
