Great Spotted Cuckoo
Clamator glandarius
TR> Tepeli Guguk
Identification
Great Spotted Cuckoos of any age are unmistakeable. They are shaped like 'common' Cuckoos but are plain creamy below, boldly spotted with white on the wings and have an obvious crest and contrasting dark face mask. In juveniles, the head is black, not grey, the throat is yellower and there are obvious rufous patches in the primaries. They spend much of their time in dense bushy areas and might be easily overlooked except in spring when they often perch in the open or call noisily.

Habitat
Summer visitor most often seen in open country with scatttered trees and bushes but also in any wooded areas which support Magpies - the chief victim of their brood parasitism.

Distribution
A rare vagrant to Britain. 39 records in Britain and Ireland up to the end of 1995.
Restricted to just a few parts of France (eg the Camargue), Italy and Greece but much more widespread in Turkey and, especially, Iberia. It is particularly abundant on the country lanes around Caceres, Extremadura.

Population
56-66,000 breeding pairs, mainly in Spain.

Hi Selen
Really good shot of this Great Spotted Cuckoo. Nice details, pose and colours. Maybe next time when I visit your country weather is little bit more comfortable so I can explore rich bird life :)

Ralf

I am always impressed with how clear you manage the eyes and feather details. Even at the distance this seems to be, you got it right. Never seen a cuckoo before.
TFS.
Have a safe trip back home, and enjoy the time you have in Prague !

Hello Selen,
there is hardly anything to add from previous comments. A great capture of this cuckoo. I wonder if you've taken this one with a tri- or monopod. My images with the 100-400 are a little disappointing concerning to sharpness. MAybe I have wnot such a steady hand.

Hi Selen

A lovely shot of this Great Spotted Cuckoo. The detail is excellent, whilst the branch bisecting the frame works really well.

Sorry I wasn't able to help with the information you needed about Rwanda.

James

Have been away in Austria for a few days.

Beautiful, crisp and clear. To desirable a little closer - you did the best job with the situation and delivered a beautiful shot! Cheers, Klaus

The Great Spotted Cuckoo is a species that I hope to photograph one day. This is a fine capture of a juvenile, the lighting color, blue sky BG and composition on the sloping branch all being excellent.
