Todays post is the male Red-legged Honeycreeper as I promised. Captured in same conditions and location as female. The first ting you think when you see this bird is wow what a nice blue bird and they have name red-legged?

20D 400mm, hand hold.

Some information from wiki:
The Red-legged Honeycreeper Honeycreeper(Cyanerpes cyaneus) is a small bird in the tanager family. It is found in the tropical New World from southern Mexico south to Peru, Bolivia and central Brazil, and on Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago.

This is a species of forest edge, open woodland, and cocoa and citrus plantations. The female Red-legged Honeycreeper builds a small cup nest in a tree, and incubates the clutch of two brown-blotched white eggs for 12-13 days, with a further 14 days to fledging.

The Red-legged Honeycreeper is 12.2cm long, weighs 14g and has a medium-long black, slightly decurved, bill. The male is violet-blue with black wings, tail and back, and bright red legs. The crown of its head is turquoise, and the underwing, visible only in flight, is lemon yellow. After breeding, the male moults into an eclipse plumage, mainly greenish with black wings.

Females and immatures are mainly green, with paler, faintly streaked underparts. The legs are red-brown in the female, and brown in young birds.

The Tobagian race C. c. tobagensis is slightly larger than the mainland forms. The call of Red-legged Honeycreeper is a thin, high-pitched tsip.

The Red-legged Honeycreeper is often found in small groups. It feeds on insects and some berries and nectar. It responds readily to the call of the Ferruginous Pygmy Owl.

Hi Ralf,

This is beautiful bird. I've seen it in Tobago but also in Costa Rica and it became one of my favorites. The blue of this bird is just incredible. TFS.

Wow, Ralf
what a bright colours. A fantastic presentation of the bird. IT might be due to my cheap, low quality monitor, but the contrast seems pretty high. HAve you tried to reduce it a little?
Regards, Jacob

Hi Ralf,
What a nice looking bird, you have composed this image quite well I think, with the background lurred the bird really stands out well. Are the colours natural? they seem a bit too saturated to me? But the pic certainly got my attention.

regards Woodymite.

What an amazing specie this is! Blue and red, such a little nature treasure again. This is a great capture with good compo, exposure and details. Thanks for sharing this so lovely specie :)

Hej Ralf,
Thanks for posting my little favourite!! Very fine capture showing sharp details and bright colours. I agree with previous comments about the contrast - a bit too sharp. But I like the background and the composition is excellent.
Many thanks, Ulla

Ralf - this is another excellent Bird portrait! Great colors and outstanding detail! Bravo! Cheers, Klaus!

Hej Ralf,
This is superb!
Just how I rember the Red-legged Honeycreeper when I saw it in Trinidad, but that was before I had the equipment to photograph birds. Beautiful colour rendition, sharp and with excellent BG.
Well done and TFS!

Lycka till med blĺhaken!

This is a very good image. One that should be on print, and on some cards.
The blue on my monitor is so nice, as is the background.
Perfect composition.

Great red legs :)

Very attractive species and well captured and exposed. Good composition, love the green background, it proviodes good contrast against that bright blue plumage.

Hello Ralf,

What a joke!!! Naming that superb bird a "red-legged"!!! Sometimes taxonomists are just ridiculous!!! The blue feathers of this magnificient bird is so wonderful, so remarkable... It is like a flying jewel! You also get a great POV and did a great composition!

And what about the nice bg enhancing the subject!

Wow great shot
very beatifull bird
the colours are fantastic
very good focus
well done

Dear Ralf!
This bird is so blue that at first view I could not believe that it is natural :)
A lot of different and true things were written by other TN members before this comment so I will write just simple: I like it a lot! :>
TFS and have a nice weekend!
