[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is not a picture simply of birds...To put nature in it's true perspective a bit, I have presented today a reality check. Wild turkey in their native surroundings rarely touched by humans. While it may be nice to see a wild turkey with a 300mm lens, close up and clear and crisp, it is not the way they are usually seen. As a matter of fact, we have hunters during open season that spend two weeks in the snowy cold outdoors and do not see one wild turkey. It is more for me in the knowing of the creature and its home, that I have seen many more than my share.

So instead of cropping and enlarging etc...I though it might bring a totally different perspective of nature, to get a glimpse at the whole picture. On this road in winter it is extremely dangerous whether walking or especially driving. Although it gives an appearance of being passable, it is just barely so. This is 6 inches of compact snow and pure slick ice, covered sparsely by a coat of gravel which really doesn't help much at all. It is a slope of 35 degrees upwards which mean you don't stop unless you know you can get traction to start again. Even 4x4 rigs cannot do it without chains.

The picture is looking uphill at 4000 feet and to the west rising. The next civilization is a small oasis of land cut between heavy trees, 40 miles away. 20 miles either S or N. In other words, these birds are at their home among the mountain pines and firs. If you walk off this road even 3 feet you will be in thigh deep snow. Neither skis nor snow shoes work very well. It is slow going for humans...and a deadly mistake if your not prepared to withstand the body punishment you will receive. This is where the wild turkeys reside.....In the words of MTV, this is their "crib" baby. Now thas' what I'm talkin' about.

They look like busy little ladies on a shopping trip to me. There's something about their stances that show purpose. :)

Good catch! I've been hearing some wild turkeys as I sit on my front porch, but I've never see any of them. Maybe I'll get a photo of one of them for you soon. Nice snow-country image. And good notes also. Well done.

the road really doesnt look as difficult as it could be, your notes are once again lovely and offer a new vision of the same picture, if i would have missed the notes i wouldnt have enjoyed this post that much,

nice pov, well composed shot, the snow on the trees look beautiful and seems that the wild turkeys are insepecting the condition of the road and the snow fall,

Great image -- and the story helps to put the image in context, which I must admit I really appreciate and enjoy. (Keeping to the TOS: Technically a good clean image with fine composition and well-handled difficult light conditions.
I spent a fabulous weekend on Johnny Hart's estate in New York a few years ago and, as we sat on the porch one evening, his daughter Perri pointed out across the yard at a tiny bit of movement in the bushes. We sat very still and a whole flock of turkeys slowly made its way across the moonlit lawn. It was magic.

Nice picture as usual, Bob, and a great note to go with it - certainly in the UK it's hard to believe Turkey's live outside farms. Very good pov and composition. Thanks for the reality check.

Hello Bob, I had never seen a wild turkey until last year, in Washington also. I don't think I'd like to be driving on this road, but I love it as a background, making the turkeys look like simply sillouettes against the white. I would have been hitting my brakes and probably sliding trying to stay on the road and unable to snap this shot, well done!
