Having missed a good shot of a Whitethroat, I vented my frustration by taking this shot of a female Small White (Pieris or Artogeia rapae) that had landed to sun itself in a wild rose bush.

This accounts for the relatively high shutter speed at the expense of the DOF.

However, I am posting this shot for two reasons:

Firstly it is an opportunity to observe the dusting of black scales on the inner part of the forewing, as well as the two black spots, that is characteristic of the female of this species. The male has only the dark scales on the forewing tip. The Small White is a common species in most of Europe.

Secondly, the slightly OOF rose leaf at the top of the BG has been attacked by the Leaf-cutting Bee. The semicircular missing parts are characteristic. There are about 15 species of Leaf-cutter Bee in Sweden and several of these use rose leaf pieces to build their larval cells. These cells are then supplied with a mixture of nectar and pollen to feed the growing offspring.

This shot was taken at a distance of about two meters with the camera hand-held and slightly sharpened after size reduction. No other PP work was caried out.

Hi Ivan, splendid butterfly with wonderful details, great sharpness, very well done, have a nice week end, ciao Silvio

Hi Ivan,
A nice capture of the small white with wings opened. Nice even exposure with fine details and very good composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ivan,
Very lovely capture of the butterfly. Hope you didn't bruise her ego by telling her she was your second choice ;-) Nicely composed with fine detail and color.

It is an unusual occurance to find a White with its wings fully open, Ivan. You must have utilized the split second action at lightening speed to capture this view.
It is a pleasure to see the subtle shades and spots on its open wings.
Thanks for sharing and all the best.

Hi Ivan
To tell you the truth I must admit that dont have any evene pretty good shot of Pieris. I dont know why :-) That is why I envy you this nice image of Pieris rapae :-) The most important thing here is the composition and visibility of diagnostic features. Also good OOF buckground
Best wishes

I would have been trying for the butterfly, but taken the whitethroat to vent my frustration! Good notes, and a nice study of the female wing. Thanks

Hi Ivan!

Good image of this very common butterfly. I don't know why, but this insect is hard to capture - it always moves too fast :-) Good composition of colours, 3D effect, details on wing. Nice work!

Hi Ivan,
a pretty one with good sharpness, I like the this beauty.
I had not much luck with butterflies this year, we had not many of them and special these ones were so hectic and never sat down for a longer time.
Thanks and greetings

Very well-handled whites, Ivan!
the shallow dof is admittedly a bit distracting (but necessary as it sometimes is), but I love the composition and colours.
Superb notes too

Hello Ivan,
These whites seem to be very numerous at the moment. But very active too. Not too easy to catch them. Beautiful and simple diagonal composition. Thanks also for the excellent note!
Bonne journée

Hello Ivan,
nice composition with this butterfly, I like the BG, Image so sharp with great colors

Hi Ivan,
nice capture of the butterfly
fine pov and composition
as you say the dof is a bit short, the forewing is oof
the rest of the bf is well detailed

Superbe macro avec beaucop de détails et magnifique composition.

Hello Ivan,
This is so interesting! I would like to be able to identify insects or animal’s species like you do :) This is a lovely female that you capture with excellent exposure, nice details in a beautiful composition and environment. We have similar ones here as well and they are fast moving creatures that don't stay in place too long... Thanks,

Hello Ivan,
pretty, well composed portrait of a female white. I love the well managed exposure resulting in very subtle, well detailed shades of colours in the white surface of wings.
Thank you! With best regards,

Hello Ivan.
The closest that I could get to this beauty around my backyard is the Psyche. To me, white butterfly stands out well against the green surrounding. This is a fine capture with spreading wings exposing the well defined wings markings. Nice light and pleasing diagonal framing.
Thanks and have a wonderful weekend.
