Naultinus elegans elegans
Auckland Green Gecko

Description:
The bright green colour is often marked by two rows of yellow cream to white blotches / stripes down each side of the gecko‘s body. The tail in this group is very versatile, being used as a “fifth limb” for climbing assistance, for balance and no doubt for food storage. The interior of the mouth and the tongue are coloured a rich blue. Grows < 95mm SV.
A bright canary yellow form of N. elegans elegans is sometimes seen, as illustrated in the adjoining photograph.
These “albino” versions possibly have a recessive gene that exhibits as a pigment lack in the chromophores.

Distribution:
Found in the North Island, north of Taranaki.

Ecology & Habitat:
Arboreal, frequenting many bushy plants and epiphytes. However stands of manuka and kanuka are favoured locations.

I thought I had posted all my gecko photos ages ago,but looking back through my TN shots I see I have only posted three or four.
These were geckos belonging to my friend Gareth (theLizardMan) who has a special permit to keep them.
They are absolutely protected in New Zealand and it is illegal to remove them from the wild without permission from the Department Of Conservation.
Gareth kindly allowed me to take his geckos out and photograph them in their natural habitats in the bush at Mount Pirongia.
There are still a few more to come.
I hope you'll enjoy them.
Steve

Hello Steve, Excellent shot of this lovely gecko. I am sure it is a wonderful experience watching them behind the camera. Lovely lighting and great focus. Ganesh

Is this a real one ? It so shiny and colorful , just like a toy !
I like it , thanks for sharing

Mario

This is really cool Steve, you hardly ever seen images of these really cool geckos from your part of the world. This is a really cool shot showing this guy crawling through the shrubs. That is so cool to see them use their prehensile tail like the chameleon. TFS :)

Hi Steve,
quiet amazing lizard, the color is cool, the pose is everything, never saw gecko like this before and just realize there is endemic gecko in New Zealand,if seeing it from distance, I though it is chameleon pet, TFS

Hi Steve,

What an amazing pose!!! And the expression on his face is priceless. Wonderful greens and excellent details. The Gecko has been made famous here because of a popular TV advertisement. My son works for that company and I must show him this picture.

Hey Steve,
a great shot of this bright green lizard.
+++ Sharp and detailed, vivid colours, great POV and composition.
--- Nothing at all :)
Very well taken.
Well done,
Joe

I don't know if it was meant to be, but I found this photo humorous. I like the gecko's pose. It doesn't seem as though anything he is balanced on is strong enough to hold him.

Hi Steve. Good sharp capture of this green lizard. It is in a good position for maximum effect. TFS. Murray.

Wow, what a different looking Gecko, Steve! And I thought I was the only one who specialized in Geckos -- particularly those residing with me in my house in Riyadh :-)!
This is a fabulous capture of a unique species I have seen for the first time. The subject stand out sharply against the green vegetation.
Thanks for sharing the information on it through your note. I feel enriched.
Warm regards,
Ram

Namastay Steve,
WOW! What beautiful colors this gecko has. You have nicely captured the details and the POV is also good with a fine composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Sincerely
Hara

Hi Steve
It look like a plastic toy dinosaur :-) Great color. Nicely presented, interesting species. Good sharpness. Little messy composition
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Hello Steve!
I have to say that this is one of the most funny reptie pictures I have seen on TN :) What an acrobatic gecko! :> And so... green :)
Lovely colours, nice DOF and details, and an informative note. What do we need more? Maybe only a little better eye-contact with this reptile :)
TFS and have a nice Sunday!
Radomir

Hello Steve,
Cool pose! Nice color, details, DOF, and exposed well..And you can tell Mr. Gecko great use of his tail ;}
Well done!
Howard

Hi steve nice shot
very good colours
the yellow is fantastic
nice composition and great momen
tbest regards Toba

What a psychedelic character in an acrobatic pose. Well positioned in the frame. The head is a bit problematic in that the green is overblown in a large patch - the curse of digital photography. The cure, I'm told is SLR (I don't have one yet) and/or shooting in RAW (I'm not there yet). Minor criticism re a very good image.
All the best,
John

Hi Steve,
