[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Mud-puddling is the phenomenon mostly seen in butterflies and involves their aggregation on substrates like wet soil, dung and carrion to obtain nutrients such as salts and amino acids. This behaviour has also been seen in some other insects, notably the leafhoppers. Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are diverse in their strategies to gather liquid nutrients. Typically, mud-puddling behavior takes place on wet soil. But even sweat on human skin may be attractive to butterflies. The most unusual sources include blood and tears.

This behaviour is restricted to males in many species, and in some like Battus philenor the presence of an assembly of butterflies on the ground acts as a stimulus to join the presumptive mud-puddling flock.

In tropical India this phenomenon is mostly seen in the post-monsoon season. The groups can include several species often including members of the Papilionidae and Pieridae.

Males seem to benefit from the sodium uptake through mud-puddling behaviour with an increase in reproductive success. The collected sodium and amino acids are often transferred to the female with the spermatophore during mating as a nuptial gift. This nutrition also enhances the survival rate of the eggs.

Little known is the fact that they even excrete the excess water drawn during mud-puddling. One or two photos in wikipedia displays this scene and it seemed very interesting to me. Ever since I have prayed to capture this moment on camera. But leave aside that I did not even have a shot of mud-puddling all this while, hence when I saw this Common Jay (Graphium doson) I was excited and unwarying about the wet place lay down flat on my belly to have a suitable POV. A few shots after as I became desparate to come ever so near, the butterfly flew away and I had to be satisfied with some reasonably good shots. Went back, changed clothes and as I went out again I saw it was back. As ever, not being satisfied (will I ever be?), I went flat again............lo and behold what I saw was just breath-taking. The butterfly was excreting excess water in short bursts. I lay still and went on clicking, trying to time the excretion bursts. After 87 shots only two were caught in frame. Nevertheless it was a day I feel proud about having been privy to this astounding behaviour as I knew I did capture something extraordinary and rare. A pray well answered at last. As I jumped about in glee having seen and freezed something rare, I also knew my laundryman would be smiling too. Never mind, all for a decent shot. Hope you all enjoy it.

hi sumon,

you did it once again.

i must say that you have a great eye and your observations are very sharp, you got a butterfly peeing and this is something very rare and unheard of. it must have taken a lot of patience to ger this kind of shot. i have seen butterflies mud puddling many a times but never seen this kind of thing,

One more thing which i appreciate is that you never let any opportunity go out of your hand to shoot a rare shot and present it to us inspite of all the difficulties involved. I have seen people giving me a strange look when i am found chasing the butterflies and you took this shot laying falt on your belly.

technically your post is of A grade which is very common to all your posts.

well done & keep it up,

Hello Sumon,
Most of the time I only look for birds, but this is such a beauty! Great clear colours and sharpness. POV, focus and DOF are outstanding.
High quality!

How unusual. I was not aware of that behavior. If you are not the expert, you soon shall be full of knowledge on these fine creatures. A very nice background for the blue one. A crisp morning shot for my eye from the Master of Butterfly.

Hello Sumon,
This is not only a fine shot both technically and aesthetically, but a rare contribution to TN showing the Blue Triangle butterfly ejecting excess fluid from its body during puddling. I have never seen this myself and I have more experience with butterflies than most.
Sumon this is a most remarkable, extraordinary and superb shot that I for one are thankful of viewing!
Well done mf!
Best wishes, Ivan

Sumon, this is very beautiful.

Excellent colors, sharpness and composition.

Great blurred bg.

An excellent job.

Sumon, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your note, before looking at the mud-puddling Common Jay a few times repeatedly to make sure the excess water was actually being disposed off, ha, ha, ha!!!
At the end of it, I was thoroughly satisfied! It is vertitable jet, indeed :-)!

The image of this charming butterfly is superb in terms of point of view, composition and colours. It was really worth spoiling your clothes twice over.
I consider this as one of the most valuable contributions on TN.
Congratulations and thanks.
Best regards,

Superb work, Sumon!
Never heard of this behaviour let alone saw it...
PS you are a writer!

Hello Sumon,
a very extraordinary capture! Such a burst of excreeting water I have never seen before on a butterfly. In addition to all the benefits from maintaining a very clear and detailed image by approaching a shy, quick and alert Graphium butterfly flat on the bottom as closely as you did, the perfect recording of this rarely observed behaviour is definitely unique. Thank you for this valuable contribution!
With best regards,

Hi Sumon,
Great close and excellent POV..beautiful color and I sure am learning alot about Butterflies!! TFS

Hi sumon, thanks for pointing to this gem. Yes its similar to my pic except for the fact the lighting is much better here.
Congrats, goutham R

Hello Sumon,
