[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Despite I am a computational economist I like various technical equipment a lot. I take care of it, I cherish it and I use it with great love. And I should say the equipment loves me too. First of all I mean well done equipment and now I tell about digital cameras.

This time all key producers of DSLR cameras have announced their new products. They are Canon 1D (and 1 Ds) Mark III and Canon 40D, Nikon D3 and D300, Sony A700, Olympus 410 (510), Pentax K10D, etc.

Each of them extols advantages of the novelties. Sometimes it is a little bit ridiculously to read press releases and reviews, which are, as a rule, oriented on an uneducated consumer. For example, often achievements of predecessors or even own ones are forgotten. However, actual achievements of a digital photography are really huge.

Appearance of the new cameras on the market induces me to learn my own equipment better. Because one of the key point of reviews is level of noise and ISO increasing (up to 3200, 6400 and higher). I have decided to check my camera, my loved Konica-Minolta Maxxum 7D, model of 2004. It is well known, that this camera was one of the leaders among its competitors (Canon 20D and Nikon D70) in this respect, especially in luminance noise) and has ISO speed up to 3200 (Noise diagrams).

One day I had not any attractive object for shooting and decided to see work of ISO 3200. I had taken few photos of the first comer object "in motion" without any preparation and other purpose (see original picture and WS).

These are quite not the tests but I like the result. I was under influence of stereotypes and was afraid to use ISO, higher than 400. After numerous comparisons I see that noise of my 6 MP camera is approximately equals the noise of the new 10 MP Canon 40D and 12 MP Sony A700. I am satisfied and continue to love my camera even more.

Only one thing disturbs me. In our world survives not the cleverest (the fairest, the kindest), but the strongest, the most impudent, dodgy, etc.

I am very grateful to experts of Konica-Minolta Photo Imaging Division and I wish them good luck, which can be compared by that, which they have gifted me, having created the excellent camera.

P.S. I want to title both posted pictures as "Autumn Paints".

Additional shot info:
Middle size in-camera JPG format (Fine JPG).
PP: No any PP noise reduction. Light cropping, resizing. Both tone correction and sharpening have applied quite a little bit.

Butterfly info: Pontia daplidice (see, for example, Hot Summer)

Fly info: N/A.

Leaves info: wild wine.

bonjour alexei

Privet Alexei,
Well, what can I said more than I love too so much my little and lighter S3IS compact?
But this is really impressive with the way it handle the high ISO and noise. Certainly delivered a clean and clear image.
Good timing in the capture of two insects at the same picture, with a well balanced composition.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,

Hi Alexei,

A very successful experiment! The butterfly and little bug look wonderful against the lovely autumn leaves. Excellent details and nice details.

hello alexei,
you camera performs well in iso 3200 alos, thats great, the image of the butterfly looks nice, the exposure has been managed well, the dry leafs give good contrast and makes nice bg,
tfs & regards

Dear Alexei!
3200 ISO??? Wow! It is more than impressive! Especially for someone like I am, whos camera can take photos with only 400ISO.
Anyway, very good final effect, especially that you photographed a butterfly - active and rather fast creature :>
TFS and have a nice evening!
Gest greetings from Lodz,

Hello Alexei,
amazing!! My small compact Canon S3 IS produces a large amount of noise on ISO 200 and above! There is a tiny amount of noise considering the very high ISO!
+++ Great sharpness, brilliant composition and good colours.
--- Slightly noisy but come on... it's on ISO 3200!! ;)
Well done,

Hi Alexei,
impressive result - so sharp, no noise, excellent work my friend. I never used more than 800 ISO. Thanks and greetings

Hi Alexei. I have read your notes with much interest as i have a minolta.Your picture has fine deatil and colours. A good POV and a bonus to get the fly in the shot. well done TFS.

Like your note. As I'm concerned, I dream about this new Canon Mark 111... I agree that this extreme ISO is not that bad at all. Techology is much impressive. My Canon 20D don't do the job with hight ISO... :(((

This is a nice capture of this beautiful specie, I like the fact that you caught it with a little friend! Lightning and clarity are beautiful! Thanks!

Very good detail retained at this ISO rating, great job of post-process NR Alexei. I've used mine up to ISO 2500 with very usable/acceptable image quality. Most often only employed in low-light situations and/or very fast moving subjects..
Looks good :)

So very true "...Only one thing disturbs me. In our world survives not the cleverest (the fairest, the kindest), but the strongest, the most impudent, dodgy, etc..."
Your example of "HOT SUMMER" is truely GREAT.
Have always loved your work. Your true devotion to this our hobby 'pours' out constantly. Am so glad I met the likes of your person.
Great photography, all over again.

Hi Alexei,
Wonderful picture with this very high ISO. NO wonder that you love your Konica 7D so much. TFS this beauty.

Priviet Alexei!

I like your post - very educative and interesting. Picture with so high iso looks very, very good. My Canon produce too much noise even at iso100... I like your very personal note too. But, if I remember correctly, Konika Minolta cam's division is dead, taken by Sony. So as always - not better product will survive but bigger company.

Hi Alex
I must say that I like your technical presentations very much, Very good notes and nice informative and good shots.
Best wisehs

Hi Alexei,
a nice picture with lovley colours and light.
Pretty good sharpness and details for a 3200 ISO.
The noise in high ISO can be under control in good light
and without any cropping, try really bad light and do some cropping you will see some changes, If you compair a 6 mp and a 10-12mp with the same censor size the lower resulotion will
have less noise.
Well done, my friend.

Hi Alexei,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful butterfly and I like the surrounding very much. Superb lighting and the colour tones are lovely of the leaves. The white butterfly stand out perfectly. The small fly at the right hand corner is a bonus. Excellent POV to portray this scene and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Dear Alexei,

thanks for experimenting again, I profit a lot from your reports! Here you tried a high ISO value, a thing I never dared for fear of grainy pictures. I do think that the above result IS grainy, the picture otherwise good (composition, interesting species, sharpness). If you check the wingtips or the upper right corner you will agree with me. But there is no reason for panic to spread in the TN community. At any extreme value on a camera the its limits become evident. But to whom am I telling all this...

My best regards to you

Hello Alexei,
Lovely autumn picture showing the white butterfly and the fly sunbathing on the brown leaves. Great sharpness and fine colours in this beautiful composition. I don't quite see the point of using a high ISO in good sunlight though, but I gather you're just experimenting!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Alex
I understand perfectly that you are in love with your camera, and with your ability to use it, I should say. Surely in my hands your camera wouldn't give such results, ha,ha.
Excellent job!!

Hello Alexei,
This is an experiment with a surprising outcome!
Personally I fine the definition more than fair, and that is before I know the ISO value!
With that knowledge it is simply amazing, nothing less!!

Hi Alexei,
Great colors and detail here. For 3200 ISO it looks amazing. At that high of a shutter speed you could stop just about any action. The camera makes just keep getting better and better at in camera noise reduction. Now I just need to buy a better camera

Hi Alexei

What a great experiment. It is a well detailed shot with excellent colours. The noise is noticeable but not as much as I would have imagined. I love the educational note

I appreciate your daring experimentation with the equipment including the use of the highest ISO here, Alexei.
The picture of the butterfly has turned out really beautiful. I also like the immense details of the foliage that sort of match with the subject in a coherent wholesomeness.
Thanks for sharing a great deal of your ideas along with this wonderful image.

Hello Alexei,
I had to look twice: ISO 3200? Amazing! Your camera has a fantastiic sensor as there is nothing wrong with the sharpness of this image: even the fly looks sharp. You are also teaching us that we must be more adventurous with cameras and I thank you for that!
