Spotted Eagle-Owl Bubo africanus

Alternative names: African Eagle Owl.

Field characters: 43-47cm, 700g.
Sexes similar in plumage but f slightly larger. Ad: Most familiar large ‘eared’ owl in South Africa.

Confusing species: Most like larger, heavy-footed Cape Eagle Owl, especially rufous-brown form, but less heavily marked, notably on the chest, and with yellow not orange eyes.
Voice: Main call a mellow two- or three-syllable hoot, 'whoo-whoo' or 'whoo-are-you', rising and falling in pitch and often uttered by a pair, sometimes in duet.

Distribution: Throughout South Africa extending north to Zaire and s Kenya, and then replaced in E and W Africa by the similar Greyish Eagle Owl B. cinerascens.

Movements: Generally sedentary and resident within 20-30km, but may extend to 695km.

Habitat: Occupies virtually every habitat in South Africa, from outcrops and drainage lines in western deserts to forest margin and grassland in the east, and from miombo woodland in the north to Karoo scrub in the south. Most abundant in more open scrub and grassland habitats for hunting, with low rocky ridges and trees for roost and nest sites. Resident in many towns and cities, nesting on buildings and hunting along verges and under street lights. Only rare in sand desert and high montane grassland.

Foraging and food: Most prey is caught after a slow glide down from a lookout. Once on the ground, prey may be chased on foot if necessary, or several small items picked up while walking about. Hunts mainly at dusk and into the night. Feeds on at least 60 types of prey. About 2/3 prey items are arthropods, but rodents, shrews and small birds form the main bulk of the diet. Diet also varies according to locality and season. Drinks regularly but open water not essential.

Breeding: Monogamous, solitary and territorial. Territorial in pairs. Visit nest site and cluck and bow to each other before laying. Copulation on ground or tree near nest, often after m has delivered food to f. Laying dates: Almost any time of year except Mar, but mainly Jun-Nov with marked peak in Aug-Oct. Eggs: 1-6, usually 2-3, laid at 1-4d intervals. Larger clutches when food plentiful Incubation: 29-33d from laying of first egg, by f, fed at nest on prey delivered by m, about 3-4 times/night. F leaves nest briefly to feed and defaecate. Development and care of young: Nestling period 40-42d. Chick hatches with white down and eyes closed. Eyes open after about 1w. Chicks leave the nest 4-6wks after hatching. F broods small chicks until about 10d old, then spends decreasing amount of time at nest and helps m with hunting, but remains near nest by day in defence.

Taken at the Sanctuary near Monk's Cowl, Drakensberg. This one was next on the display to show how it flys so silently when it comes in to take food from the handler.

Tim, vivid colors, great pose, great look.

A really excellent picture with a great sharpness.

Hi Tim it looks as if a painter missed some spots, but he is a great owl and the compo is sharp along with the lighting, well done...
