[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I decided to take a break from my Rocky Mountain Series and post a few current local images. Horia, Niek and I have been discussing looking for and photographing patterns and/or details in nature. I was saying how difficult it sometimes is to find interesting compositions with good contrast and centers of interest in the rainforest. Everything is green and the light pretty even. However in October all that would have been green a few days earlier can be punctuated with color and some nice patterns emerge. I was very attracted to the patterns in this scene and the range of color. Niek will probably comment that I lost some detail in the dark areas but I kind of like the strong contrast that sets off the fern and leaf shapes. I also like the strong diagonal of colored leaves and the ferns in their fall hues on either side.

Hi Evelynn

Hmmm...now this is a tricky one :)
A very "heavy" picture, indeed full of patterns and textures, but perhaps a bit too "crowded"...
I do see the main elements of the composition that you mention here; they are definitely a beautiful factor of the scene - the diagonal branches of leaves bordered by the arches of ferns.
Also, another strong point is the "contrast" of shapes between the leaves and the fern...they give a good sense of texture.
However, i already do agree with Niek's future comment on the dark areas :) I generally like contrast in such "pattern-pictures", but here i feel it's maybe too much, to the sense that you've lost the so-called "shadows with detail". I think that shooting against the light caused that. The idea of shooting against the sun is a good one for me if you focus on a single leaf or a simple shape in general; when you have such a multi-detailed shot, it's good to have the extra depth given by some shadows with details...that my opinion, anyway :)
The colors, although a bit difficult for me to "handle" (but that's only because of my color problem) are beautiful and nicely brought up by the contrast.
With all that, i praise you efforts to pull something interesting from the rainforests near you. It's definitely the first...a pioneer of (i hope) many more to come :)

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Evelyn

I really like this composition. the different shapes and yones sum up autumn. Sometimes I think it is much more important to get a pleasing shot that conveys the sense of place or time, rather than getting too het up about dark and blown areas - but that is just me! :)

Hi Evelynn,
this looks good to my eye and I really like the colours you have captured.I see enough detail in this shot and have similar photos myself and they reflect the reality at the time fairly well as strong contrasts this time of year are common with the now lower on the horizon sun.Tfs. Bob

Hi Evelynn,
Beautiful composition,nice colors.
Best regards,

Hello Evelynn

A beautiful autumnal scene.
I love the way the light enters the forest and reveals the autumn colours.
The composition is very well done.I see the image in quadrants with each quarter displaying a different texture and colour.
The focus and details are sharp.
You chose an excellent POV to get this wonderful natural effect.TFS

Hello Evelynn ! I love patterns in nature shots. I really like this one, you've seen it well and you've done it well with great dramatic

Mariocontrasts. Good work, very artistic. thanks !

I do love patterns. They follow me all day...and now I see others who see the same ones...patterns...and then you add some ferns and colored leaves... it is a complex picture but pleasing to my mind. My wife is watching me type and looking at this on the monitor...I think she likes it ever more than me..what a nice surprised.. Well...Tis a noble image...IMHO!
Bob

Hello Evelynn,
Lovely details are brought out as the sunlight hits the leaves!
I also notice the fern putting on the autumn dress...
Well framed collection of details, attractive colour palette!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Evelynn,
A very fine close look at nature and an interesting diagonal composition in beautiful light. I like the different patterns and the colours are beautiful. It is a great art to have eyes for details in nature!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hello Evelynn.
Wonderful mix of colours, shapes and contrasts. Beautiful light. Good crop. Well seen.
Best regards, Steve.

Hi Evelynn,

I like your pattern search. Going to talk to Niek about it, he is a colleague of mine.
This picture is wonderful. The variety in light and in patterns and you PoV.
Tfs, Willem

This almost has a two-dimensional quality to it. I like it's stability. Trevor
