This is one of the older male Red Deer from our trip to Richmond Park in London. He had just been trying to barge his way in on a group of females but the younger much stonger looking Stag was not having any of it and sent him packing. This picture shows him trudging his way back to the shade of a big Oak tree. I think his days are numbered as they cull many of the older males in November to help keep the numbers down to a managable level. The poor thing looks tired out.

Red Deer ( Cervus elaphus ) Shoulder Height 115-120cm.
An imposing animal and Britains largest native land mammal. The Male is larger than the Female and has well developed branching antlers. These are shed each February, reappear in the spring and become larger with each succesive season.
Their summer coat is reddish brown but appears more grey-brown in the winter.
Lives in seperate sex herds for much of the year and spends much of the daytime resting or wallowing in mud. They are most active from dusk to dawn.
Annual autumn rut accompanied by roaring, bellowing sounds from Stags.
Restricted to wild terrain in Southern scotland and the Highlands, Lake District, South west England and Ireland.

Wow Nick, this is a great shot! The light is perfect autumn low and soft light and works so well with this scene. He is a very handsome deer and you caught a good moment as he moves through the grass. Focus and exposure excellent with that ambient light. Nice and clear and sharp. Wonderful.

Hello Nick,

This is a bit bigger than a red admiral!
He does look tired but you have captured him to perfection. His coat looks shiny and smooth, his antlers are sharp and jagged; it is only at his mouth and eyes that the tiredness can be recognised! Excellent low, light creating long shadows!

kind regards,
Bev :-)

Poor thing though... I know they have to be culled but it's still very sad.
I hope this guy survives at least one more winter.
A superb shot of this majestic Deer anyhow.
+++ The golden lighting is beautiful. You've handled the exposure very well.
Superb clarity that conserves a high amount of detail along with crisp edges and sharpness throughout.

Hi Nicholas,
What a sunny and clear capture!
I like the light caught here, I suppose it shouldn't be frequently to have it in London, but you caught it with mastery.
Details on the deer's fur and thorns are simply great.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
Love the framing, it goes perfect for the tonal harmony.
My best regards,

Nick : Bravo for this red deer.
I never saw some as much as with your photographs.
In a friendly way

Very nice occasion to use saturation but not too much just right yes? It is a quality animal. Very grand in it's stature. The old wise one. Just as well he is safe at his present location. The US West in fall would be his doom. So well it stands. Very nice Nick!

Buen enfoque, excelente luz y colores naturales.

Hi Nick,

This is the first time I've seen an old deer. Nice pose. I don't know how he can hold his head up with those tremendous antlers. Wonderful natural colors and details and a lovely setting.

Hi Nick

Wonderful shot and I love the way you have caught him with the tongue out trying to detect females ready to mate. Lovely sharp details and wonderful colours on the coat

Hello Nick
Very intersting shot of this Red Deer,
Perfect focusing,composition and BG,Welldone.

Hi Nick,

Sorry I haven't been around and commenting, but just had time over the last couple of days to quickly post.

He certainly look a little worse of wear. and I've fallen out of may a pub pulling the same facial expressions! It's the light and level of detail that make this shot work so well on the eye, but the story is also a critical part of understanding why he looks the way he looks.

Great picture,
