[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here another picture taken during my summer holidays in the North Italian Alps which brought up a huge number of butterly and insect pictures.

The species shown
- Boloria pales
- family Nymphalidae
belongs to the group of butterflies which contribute to the richness and beauty of alpine areas above the tree-line. The fast flier prefers altitudes above 2000m. It likes to visit yellow and orange-coloured flowers, preferentially. The visits on the flowers are short and you have to be fast and patient when you want to obtain a picture.

Location: On the way from Lake Zufritt (Val Martello) to the Ebenes Joechl. Altitude: about 2200m.

Boloria pales ocurs in higher mountain regions: Alps, Pyrenees, Cantabrian Mountains, Tatra, Carpathians, Apennines, Balkan, eastwards to the Caucasus, West-Himalaya.
Foodplant of the caterpillar: Viola species, particularly Viola calcarata.
Wingspan: about 32 mm.

- natural light
- ISO 200
- hand-held

Hello Peter,
Great capture of this Boloria species, one I have never seen in real life. the wings an body of this underside shot a superbly sharp, the composition on the yellow composite flower is pleasing and the background forms a fine contrast. This is a shot that would make fine illutration for a good butterfly book.
Well done, thanks and enjoy your weekend,
Ivan
