Still in keeping with my Remembrance Day theme, I offer this black-headed gull facing out to sea, with the words of Robert Louis Stevenson's Requiem:

This be the verse you 'grave for me:
Here he lies where he long'd to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

The Laughing Gull (Larus ridibundus), also known as the Black-headed Gull, is a very common gull in Europe and Asia, but it was new to my Canadian eyes.

The chocolate brown head, which appears at first almost black, is part of its summer finery, replaced in winter with white and leaving only vertical streaks of the brown.

Thanks for looking and have a wonderful weekend

Beautiful mood shot of this gull. I can almost give projection as to what he is feeling as he has been out at sea and now scans over when returning..
Bob

Great perspective to the image and DoF.

Hi Silke,

I am so glad you left those interesting looking posts in the picture. The gull perched on top of them is just wonderful. Although he is looking out to the sea we have a perfecr view of him. Wonderful colors and details. An unusual post with your usual great notes.

Clever shot!!! Love the way you used the posts to create depth and composition. Excellent shot!

Hello Silke,

I really must compliment you on this great viewpoint! It is easy to to feel oneself being the seagull! Despite his back being turned to the camera, it is still possible to detect a glint in the eye!

An excellent sharp image and good composition!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Silke,
Beautiful composition......the gull looking down along the railing posts....the focus just perfect, blurring gradually toward the water....and the verse you chose so apt.
Wonderful tribute to Remembrance Day.

Regards,
kessi

Hello!
You have really a quality portfolio of pictures here!
This one has a fascinating composition with this stepwise lower fence (or whatever it is :-). And also perfect with a bird looking into the picture from exactly that position.
This bird is called Hettemåke in my language (Norwegian), or translated something like Bonnet Gull. I dont see many of them as far north as here in Tromsoe, but in Southern Norway there are lots of them.
TFS!

Jon

An apt quotation from Stevenson here, Silke -- brings to mind Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar," too. The pattern of the perch really makes the whole image, in my mind. The lighting on the gull, and the depth-of-field control strengthen the presentation. Thanks, too, for the enjoyable, informative note.

Warm regards,
Jim

Great shot.
