This posting is purely a result of my joining Trek Nature. I had noticed several postings from the Monterey Bay Aquarium (Manyee & Trinko), so I headed there (just as the Chinese freighter hit the Bay Bridge in San Francisco - I drove over it the next day)!

Anyway, I was not disappointed with the jellyfish display - in my opinion - the best thing there.

The stinging sea nettle (Chrysaora quinquecirrha) is a species of jellyfish occurring particularly in Atlantic estuaries. It is a bell-shaped invertebrate, usually semi-transparent and with small, white dots and reddish-brown stripes; Sea nettles without stripes have a bell that appears white or opaque. The nettle's sting is rated from "moderate" to "severe" and can be pernicious to smaller prey; it is not, however, potent enough to cause human death, except by allergic reaction. While the sting is not particularly harmful, it can cause moderate discomfort to any individual stung. The sting can be effectively neutralized by misting vinegar over the affected area. This keeps unfired nematocysts from firing and adding to the discomfort.

The sea nettle is radially symmetrical, marine, and carnivorous. Its mouth is located at the center of one end of the body, which opens to a gastrovascular cavity that is used for digestion. It has tentacles that surround the mouth to capture food. Nettles have no excretory or respiratory organs. Each sea nettle is free-swimming and can reproduce both sexually and asexually.

Hi James,
nice to see such a great shot of yours after break of one week. Excellent focus and coloration on both see nettle and BG. Lighting, composition, timing super. But your notes also very informative and nice to read.
Thanks a lot.
Best wishes.

Very intriguing . I remember well Tom Tinkos pictures. I used to ask him if he lived at the place. He might have had a job waiting for him to ask.
A fine picture and super saturated in a particular blue which I love when in water. It reminds me of the Bahamas or perhaps Belize...Very nice picture taken at the exact right distance and with glass between you and it:-)

Hello James,
Beautiful capture with great details and lighting. These beautiful jellys our some relative anyway, caused some great discomfort to my wife and I when we were on Cozumel a few years back. Had I known what I know now, that you can get relief by urinating on the sting that MAY have happened.
Thanks for sharing James.

Hi James!

I like your picture very much! Wow! These colors! And that sharpness! The shapes and patterns are wondeful, the waving arms of the sea nettle give the whole a stunning aspect and underline the very pleasant artistic effect.

Well seen, well done!

Kind regards

Hello James,

Great composition. Sharpness is fantastic, I did not think it was possible under water to have such a sharpness. Colours are superb.

Hi James and very nice to see you back!

I trust your trip was nice and i see you've come back with some great photos, too :)
This is indeed a magnificent sight and those jellyfish are, i must admit, some very attractive subjects! Their vibrant colors and the "contrast" with the blue water really jumps out of the screen and brings a lot of attention to your shot, even from teh thumbnail.
The composition you have created is also great and interesting, while the details are very nice and sharp, despite the rather long shutter speed and the fact that they were mooving (i guess).
Anyway, charming work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi James,
must be a difficult shot to pull off, all sorts of exposure problems! Excellent detail and wonderful contrast from the colours. Striking image.

Hi James

What a great shot, wouldn't it make a great talking point with a large print hanging in the hall way.
Excellent for ISO 1600, great sharpness and perfect exposure and light.
Great work.

Hello James,
What a fantastic intens colours. The contrasts are amazing. Excellent light and sharpness. Very beautiful dynamic composition.

Underwater ballet - - - graceful curves and whirls. Excellent color and light.Unusual subject. Wonderful shot1

Dramatic colors and I like the comp James. The trailing curves of the jellyfish give a hint of it's graceful motion..Well lit and detailed, good POV.
Very well done.

Really gorgeous James
Beautiful composition of color and movement

Hi James,
Nice showing of these free flowing Sea Nettles. Sharp and crisp clear image. Great color clarity. Very well done.

Yes the jellyfish display is special there! One time they had special exhibition with lots of tanks. It was fabulous. That is a nice aquarium. Did you know that people can book the aquarium for special events like private parties, weddings etc. Wouldn't a wedding if front of that giant tank be memorable?

This is a fantastic image. I love the framing of the tentacles and those two vibrant jellies rushing downward. It is just wonderful.

Hello James

Hmmmm so they have nettles in the sea too!The regular, garden variety have been my nemesis my whole life,so I guess I best stay clear of these too.
The colour contrast is striking and the composition is quite artistic.
A beautiful image.
