[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I did not expect at all, that information on a Sigma lens will cause such interest. Therefore I have decided to add with it some data based on my experience.

Having minimal focusing distance 0.95 m this lens does inefficient use of my macro ring flash. I have come to conclusion, that macro flash's use is effective only on distances till 50-60 cm. I use with Sigma lens only inbuilt or external flashes.

I have added Workshop which demonstrates sharpness of the lens on edges on APS-C sensor cameras. It is good enough, I think.

All in all I am happy to have this lens despite that I bought it while I was waiting (whole 8 months) for arrival of my main telelens (Minolta 100-400 APO) from Singapore.

Now I see both lenses supplement each other perfectly.

Presented shot was taken at the same time that previous one. It represents a bit more visitors of the charming flower. This is Vanessa Cardui (Painted Lady or Cosmopolitan), whish was presented by me last year (Ukrainian Painted Lady, Vanessa Cardui: lowest POV, Cosmopoliten: upper POV). That year was poor for butterfly shooting in my countryside and I met this species only one or two times and could see it only on the ground. This year was luckier in this respect.

This is also a little Goldenrod Crab Spider (if I am not mistaken) which loves our places and was shown at my few shots, posted on TN last year (Goldenrod Spider, C'est la vie (ou C'est la mort)).

Some info about these visitors your can find in notes to these pictures and with help of the following links:

Add. shot info:
Exposure program: aperture priority.
Metering mode: centered weighted average.
Exposure bias value: -1.00 eV.
Focal length: 200 mm.
Support: monopod.
Frame: FF with great loss of quality because of hard compression and resizing.
PP: almost without any PP.

Appendix A:
This shot also demonstrates an effect from reducing focal length till 200 mm (from 300 mm in comparison with my last post at approximately constant shooting distance). You can see the DOF increased significantly.

Appendix B:
I have written some time ago that I am participant only this site. I don't like any Russian speaking photo sites. However, week ago I have dared to state some reasons in occasion of a choice of a macro lens on a question of one of participants of a forum (Russian Sony/Minolta club). After that few days I had read rough insults in my address and charges, that I understand nothing neither in a photography, nor in a photo equipment.

I am not a huge expert on photography and on photo equipment. It is true and it is clear. However I have some experience and I suppose that it can be useful for thinking people.

Unfortunately, this incident reflects the state of our society in present time in almost all spheres of our daily life.

Certainly, I have left this forum immediately but until now I cannot forgive myself for that mistake. In fact, I did not doubt at all of such result.

Now you understand why I am here and why I love TN and its atmosphere.

So many colours that are very vibrent and bright.
Very sharp with superb clarity and a lot of detail.
Great POV aswell.
Very well done,

Hello Alexei,

Beautiful sharp picture. If possible, I would not have cropped this way. I would have keep whole of the second flower.

hello Alexei,
Beautiful light for this picture too. Amazing sharpness and beautiful, warm colours. Just a little thing, maybe it would have been better to show the entire petals of the flowers. Very fine blurred background.
Thanks and best regards

Hello Alexei,
Certainly a better one than the 'next' in the gallery. Unfortunately I believe it is mine...:-)
Once again, great work and technically outstanding.

A wonderful composition - lovely arrangement...very pleasing how the flowers seem to 'face' one way and the butterfly another. Great light and color. Perfect details!

Hello Alexei,
Superb technical quality of this shot, not only because of the lens: the photographer has to play a part as well!
I like the complementary effect of the flower on the rather worn Painted lady. The lighting, composition and bokeh add the finishing touches to a near to perfect shot.
Well done and thanks,
Have a good weekend,

Hi Alexei

I think the great interest generated by your discussion about the Sigma 70-300 lens here is due to the large number of photographers using it. It's indeed a very cheap lens for the quality it provides and it's big versatility gives it a good use for a wide range of photographers - from macro to telephoto.
This is also a terrific example for the quality of the lens! I've noticed teh great inclrease in DOF once the focal length is reduced from 300mm. It would be nice to always find subjects that don't run or fly away so that we could use it for most of our close-ups :)
The sharpness here is impeccable! In fact it's so clear and good that i can't imagine how amazing it looks without all this compression.
At first, when i saw your post, i thought it was a poor composition, with the butterfly in the center. After reading your notes, i understand clearly why you chose this one. You needed something in which you can compare the sharpness in the center with the ones at the edge, and for that it's a perfect shot!
Wonderful work with both of your subject well presented and visible!

Bravo and TFS

PS: we are happy to have you here my friend and i'm sorry other sites can't appreciate you. It's really their loss!

Buenos días,
como siempre una maravilla de trabajo,
un bello sol que pinta perfectamente tu trabajo,
excelente foco y detalles,
saludos Alexei.

Dear Alexei,
a marvellously rich, very precise, extraordinarily well lighted and reported landing of the Painted Lady. Blossoms and butterfly literally stand out from the screen in front of a suberbly smooth, perfectly supporting distant background. There is so much energy and warmth in this image - what a pleasure to look at, my friend.
Don't worry about your experiences with other forums. Rude words always go together with ignorance, and that is by no means restricted to Russian forums, it's an international phenomenon well known from many parts our so called western civilization. With participants like you, TN is an inviting and well supporting forum for the exchange of images, thoughts, observations, comments and useful suggestions.
Have a very good day. My best regards,

Hi Alexei

I'm not sure what I like most, the butterfly or the flower. Both are beautiful and well shot. Beautiful colours, sharp focusing, perfect DOF and well composed. Stunning image

p.s. I'm not posting until I have caught up with everyones photos, time seems to have escaped me lately.

Hi Alexei, superb composition with beautiful butterfly and wonderful flower with splendid colors, excellent details and great sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Alexei,
Another very beautiful butterfly image from you! Both butterfly and flower are sharply in focus showing impressive details and wonderful colours. The background is a beautiful soft colour too. Personally I would have included the whole flowers since they are so sharp and very beautiful.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Another high lesson on photography, dear Alexei!
What a superb shot!! You were really lucky this time, since the butterfly chose the best of the perchs. I will have to tell to our gardener to plant that kind of flowers in our garden. They are so bright and beautiful!
Magnificent details and lovely composition.
Congratulations and thank you very much for sharing.
My best regards

Hi Alexei,
A beautiful image with such lovely colour and crystal clear detail. The pattern of the butterflys wings is cleary seen...quite amazing. The DOF is perfect with the background totally neutral.A bit of a shame that the flowers are a bit tight within the frame.Very nice work...TFS.
Regards, David

Gran enfoque Alexei y colores muy naturales en la mariposa. Veo que también respetar el espacio a la izquierda como manda la norma, aunque yo hubiese preferido la flor de la derecha que el espacio de la izquierda jeje.

Provet Alexei,
I think it's so good the way you contribute here in TN.
Not to mention the high artistic quality of your shots, but also the clear way you share your experiences here.
It takes time to do research and put it on clear terms to help us here.
Just love the warm light and the intense yellow of the flower, that illuminates the whole picture, and no traces of even a single part burned out.
My compliments and thanks for share it.
Best regards,

Wonderful picture. I have that same lens and it also amazes me at the image quality considering the price. In this case it appears as if it were a high end lens...but I suspect this is due to you, the man behind the viewfinder. Wonderful presentation replete with quality notes.

Hi Alex
Another great shot Normally I would said that you should crop it a little bit more from the right for better compo but I like the additional flower situation here. Sharpness and background is perfect. I also like good contrast vivid red/yellow VS light brown
Best wishes
