This is the river in spring, just after the ice has broken.

During winter the water level in the river is sinking, and this is captured before the river starts getting bigger from the snow melting in the mountains. That is why we see large parts of ice on dry land, as the river was considerably larger when the ice froze last autumn…

As soon as the ice breaks the salmon starts entering the river, preparing for the September spawning. The longest travelling salmon will have to go around 110 km upstream to reach their “childhood home” in the river!

Hello Pablo, I like this kind of shot - dramatic contrast and here it works well. It would look good in a frame on a wall! You got great exposure on what must be a difficult scene to shoot, the blues are well saturated and the ice has good shadow and mid tones. Very nice composition and clear and sharp.

Hello Pablo,

Nice capture. It must have frozen well to form such a thick layer ice on a flowing river? Lovely natural colours. A good POV and nice BG. Well done. Intersting notes, a specialy about the salmon. Regards and TFS BOB

Pablo,
Today it's -22*C here in Calgary; and, to see your ice breaking up gives me hope that soon our COLD WINTER will also be over with.
We have a similar situation here.
You enjoy a lovely BLUE river; it must be very clean.
Friendly regards,
Mario.

Hi Pablo. Interesting to see ice on the riverside as seen here. I have not seen a river with ice on it before. It must get very cold for this effect. Most interesting notes about the salmon finding there way around these rivers. TFS. Murray.

You live in a winter wonderland of beauty! I never saw such huge sheets of ice.

Cool Pablo..I mean really cool :)
I like the blue color of the water, and the large chucks of ice as they break apart..
Well composed - Well done,
Howard

Hi Pablo,
A wonderful photo. I really like the art nature has created in this photo. The left over evidence from winter and the still limited ray of colors gave this photo a perfect abstract touch. The composition is great and makes you wonder what can be found around the bend.

Niek

Hi Pablo

As i said before, i know i've missed some lovely photos f you and i'm back today at this beauty here :)
What an impressive capture...i may be wrong here, but it might be a first for TN for this moment - defrosting river.
Anyway, it's a very original capture and presented in the "Pablo Minto Classical" way. The composition i would say is the main element here, because of the very careful placement of the items in the frame.
Also, the exposure, although difficult, was very well managed and the colors are charming.
Very good contrast and DOF, too.
All these elements put in the same scene and added to the impact generated by the big blocks of ice braking make a superb shot!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

very original and mysterious

Hi Pablo,
Simple yet great composition with perfect exposure and sharpness. Not an everyday shot, and the blue is really wonderful. Tfs, congrats. Greetings, László
